Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1993 — Pessac-Léognan, Magnum
This Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1993, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, delivers a mature, elegant and classical expression of Pessac-Léognan. In a demanding Bordeaux vintage, La Mission Haut-Brion produced a serious, refined and unmistakably Graves-style wine, marked by cassis, dark fruits, smoke, graphite, mineral notes and a structure now fully softened by time.
The magnum format brings particular interest here: it encourages slower evolution, better preserves the wine’s structure and enhances the collector dimension of this bottle. Today, this 1993 should be approached as a mature great Bordeaux, opened with care and served after gentle aeration.
Terroir: Pessac-Léognan, deep gravel and classicism
Located opposite Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion lies on deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay. This terroir gives the wine its structure, density and smoky, mineral, earthy signature that distinguishes the great red wines of Graves.
In 1993, the wine stands out less through power than through balance, fruit finesse and aromatic precision. Time has softened the tannins and developed tertiary nuances of cedar, tobacco, fine leather, undergrowth, graphite and cold smoke.
Tasting notes
Appearance: evolved garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on cellaring, with fine visual presence enhanced by the magnum format.
Nose: elegant and evolved, with cassis, ripe dark fruits, plum, graphite, cold smoke, mineral notes, cedar, blond tobacco and fine leather. With aeration, nuances of undergrowth, noble earth, sweet spices, mocha and subtle truffle may appear.
Palate: medium-bodied, supple and harmonious, with tannins now melted, dark fruit still present and fine Graves freshness. The finish is elegant, lightly smoky, mineral and persistent, in a register of classical maturity rather than power.
90/100 — Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book
Robert Parker describes Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1993 as one of the most promising wines of the vintage. His review highlights a deep ruby-purple colour and an expressive nose of cassis, minerals, smoke and sweet oak. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and rich, with surprisingly supple tannins for the vintage. A classical La Mission Haut-Brion, now fully mature, appreciated for its balance, purity and the charm of an evolved great Graves wine.
Expression of the 1993 vintage
The 1993 vintage in Bordeaux produced more classical and measured wines than the great solar years, with less spectacular ripeness but some fine successes from the most rigorous estates. At La Mission Haut-Brion, the wine is now fully mature, where finesse, evolved aromas and the smoky signature of Graves take precedence over power.
In summary: a mature, elegant and classical Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1993 in magnum, awarded 90 points by Robert Parker, marked by cassis, smoke, graphite, cedar, melted tannins and the mineral complexity of Graves.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
