Château La Mission Haut-Brion — Legendary Super Second
Richness, finesse, and gravelly roots: an iconic estate of Pessac-Léognan, the natural sister of Haut-Brion, whose wines rival the First Growths in depth and longevity.
A Legendary Estate Parallel to Haut-Brion
Classified as a Cru Classé de Graves (1953), Château La Mission Haut-Brion is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s most illustrious “super seconds.” The estate belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon and is managed by Jean-Philippe Delmas, alongside Pascal Baratié, Jean-Philippe Masclef, and Prince Robert of Luxembourg. The vineyard covers approximately 30 ha: ±26 ha planted to red grapes (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc) and ±4 ha to white grapes (Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc).
An Exceptional Terroir
The estate rests on the same terrace of deep gravel as Haut-Brion, over a clay-sandy limestone subsoil. This geology gives the wines remarkable aromatic precision, depth, and longevity. Nestled between Talence and Pessac, the vineyard benefits from a temperate microclimate that allows for slow, even ripening.
Heritage and Continuous Modernization
A pioneer with its glass-lined vats in 1926, La Mission has continuously refined its winemaking: a new vat room in 1987, cellar renovation in 1996, and ongoing technical innovation. A perfect balance between respect for the soil and cutting-edge oenology, all while preserving a timeless, classical style.
Winemaking & Ageing
- Red wines — Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats (~180 hL). Blending takes place immediately after malolactic fermentation. Ageing for 18–22 months in 100% new oak, giving structure and complexity.
- White wines — Fermentation and ageing in new barrels for 13–16 months, with no malolactic fermentation to preserve tension, brilliance, and balance.
Style & Cuvées
Château La Mission Haut-Brion Rouge — Powerful, structured, and deeply aromatic (ripe cassis, truffle, tobacco, graphite). Dense texture, fine tannins, 30–50 years of ageing potential.
Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc — A unique alliance of richness and freshness (citrus, white flowers, flint) with remarkable tension. One of the finest dry white wines in Bordeaux.
La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion — The second red wine, concentrated and precise, approachable in its youth.
La Clarté de Haut-Brion — The shared second white wine of both sister estates: elegant, fruity, and racy.
