Château Laville Haut-Brion 2008 — Bordeaux Blanc
The Château Laville Haut-Brion 2008 is a rare and highly symbolic bottle in the history of great dry white Bordeaux. This vintage was the last released under the Laville Haut-Brion name, before the wine became La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc from the 2009 vintage onwards.
Dominated by Sémillon and complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, this great white from Pessac-Léognan combines richness, freshness and aromatic depth. The profile evokes ripe lemon, orange blossom, grapefruit, beeswax, fine honey, honeysuckle, yellow fruit, smoky notes and noble minerality. A collectible bottle: historic, rare and made for lovers of ageworthy white Bordeaux.
Laville Haut-Brion, a legend of dry white Bordeaux
Laville Haut-Brion is one of the most prestigious names in white Bordeaux. Produced in very small quantities, it has long been considered one of the great references for dry white wines built for ageing, capable of rivaling the world’s finest whites through its complexity, texture and longevity.
Its style is built on the depth of Sémillon, which brings volume, richness, beeswax, honeyed nuances and ageing capacity, while Sauvignon Blanc adds tension, aromatic lift and citrus freshness. The cool, precise 2008 vintage reinforces this sense of balance: the wine combines substance, vibrancy and a long, saline, refined finish.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale golden yellow with bright reflections, showing a subtle and noble evolution from bottle age.
Nose: complex and refined, with ripe lemon, grapefruit, orange blossom, honeysuckle, beeswax, fine honey and fresh almond. With air, notes of candied orange, soft smoke, warm stone, yellow fruit, fine vanilla and noble oak begin to appear.
Palate: full, elegant and beautifully held together, with the deep texture of Sémillon and citrus freshness that lengthens the wine. The finish is long, precise and lightly honeyed, carried by citrus fruit, wax, white flowers and a fine mineral sensation.
94/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
92/100 — Wine Spectator
17.5/20 — Jancis Robinson
18/20 — René Gabriel
Robert Parker describes Laville Haut-Brion 2008 as a sensational dry white wine, marked by lemon blossom, orange marmalade, beeswax, honeysuckle and subtle smoky notes, with a full-bodied palate and the capacity to evolve for several decades. Other critics confirm the high level of this final vintage under the Laville Haut-Brion label. A rare, historic and highly desirable bottle for lovers of great white Bordeaux.
The 2008 vintage and serving advice
The 2008 vintage gives this white wine a fresh, precise and beautifully balanced structure. After more than fifteen years of evolution, it is beginning to develop the complex nuances of mature white Bordeaux: beeswax, fine honey, candied fruit, ripe citrus, smoky notes and a more enveloping texture.
Serve at around 11 to 13°C, in large white wine glasses. Avoid serving it too cold, so the depth of Sémillon and the aromatic nuances gained with age can fully emerge. A short aeration in the glass is preferable to strong decanting, especially if the bottle already shows fine maturity.
Key point: a rare and historic Château Laville Haut-Brion 2008, the final vintage under this legendary label, rated 94/100 by Wine Advocate, rich, fresh, complex and built for ageing.
Food pairings: roast lobster, turbot with beurre blanc, sole meunière, scallops, creamy poultry, morel risotto, pan-seared foie gras, aged Comté, citrus-based cuisine or refined mushroom dishes.
