Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1982 — Pessac-Léognan

This Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1982 is one of the legendary mature Bordeaux wines from Pessac-Léognan. Produced in one of the most celebrated vintages of the late twentieth century, it combines the power of Graves, the depth of ripe dark fruit and the unmistakable smoky, earthy and mineral signature of La Mission Haut-Brion.

Now fully mature yet still remarkably alive in well-preserved bottles, the 1982 expresses a grand classical profile: blackcurrant, black plum, cigar smoke, graphite, truffle, warm earth, cedar, fine leather and cold ash. It is a wine of breadth, texture and authority, built around concentration, depth and a long, noble finish.

Terroir: Pessac-Léognan, deep gravel and smoky Graves identity

Located opposite Château Haut-Brion, Château La Mission Haut-Brion lies on deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay. This terroir gives the wine its distinctive balance of structure, density and aromatic complexity, with a smoky mineral dimension that is among the clearest signatures of great Graves.

The 1982 vintage brought exceptional ripeness and concentration to Bordeaux. At La Mission Haut-Brion, it produced a wine of impressive scale, combining ripe tannins, deep fruit, earthy complexity and remarkable longevity. Today, it should be opened with care, with gentle aeration rather than prolonged decanting.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet with ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on bottle evolution, still showing impressive depth when well preserved.

Nose: deep, complex and unmistakably Graves, with blackcurrant, black plum, dark berries, cigar smoke, graphite, pencil shavings, black truffle, peat, cedar, fine leather and warm earth. With aeration, nuances of tobacco, roasted meat, forest floor, cold ash and subtle spice may appear.

Palate: broad, concentrated and mature, with resolved tannins, deep dark fruit and a long mineral frame. The texture is ample and polished, while the finish remains expansive, smoky, earthy and persistent, carrying the noble power of a great mature Graves wine.

Expert review

100/100 — William Kelley, Wine Advocate

William Kelley describes Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1982 as one of the great wines of the vintage, still remarkably youthful, with a saturated ruby-black colour. His review highlights deep aromas of black fruit, cigar smoke, noble earth, black truffle, peat and pencil shavings. The palate is broad, concentrated and structured, with a deep core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long, expansive finish. He also notes that the wine has gained harmony and elegance with time, without losing its vitality, confirming its place among the greatest La Mission Haut-Brion wines of the twentieth century.

Expression of the 1982 vintage

The 1982 vintage gives La Mission Haut-Brion a majestic combination of ripeness, power and tertiary complexity. The wine is now in a profound mature phase, yet the greatest bottles can still show impressive vitality, depth and structure. Its character is defined by dark fruit, smoky minerality, tobacco, truffle, graphite and the imposing texture of a historic Bordeaux vintage.

In summary: a legendary Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1982, awarded 100 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, marked by depth, smoky Graves complexity, black fruit, truffle, graphite, mature tannins and a long, noble finish.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, truffle-based dishes, mushrooms, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
