Château Pape Clément Blanc 2013 — Pessac-Léognan
This Château Pape Clément Blanc 2013 is one of the great dry white wines of Pessac-Léognan. In a vintage particularly successful for Bordeaux whites, it combines richness, aromatic brightness and freshness, with a blend dominated by Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle.
The wine stands out for its intensity, ample texture and long finish, between exotic fruits, ripe citrus, pear, white flowers, creamy and toasted notes, and gravelly minerality. Already expressive, it retains fine ageing potential thanks to its freshness and substance.
Terroir: Pessac-Léognan, gravel soils and great Bordeaux whites
Located just outside Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément benefits from gravel terroirs capable of producing dry white wines of great depth. The well-drained soils favour ripeness, while the freshness of the terroir preserves tension, precision and balance.
The 2013 blend brings together 54% Sémillon, 36% Sauvignon Blanc, 8% Sauvignon Gris and 2% Muscadelle. Sémillon brings volume, texture and complexity, while the Sauvignons enhance aromatic brightness, freshness and mineral length.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale golden yellow with luminous reflections, fine brilliance and still measured evolution for a great white Bordeaux.
Nose: expressive and refined, with papaya, pear, ripe lemon, orange zest, melon, mango, white flowers, light cream and toasted notes. With aeration, nuances of fine honey, almond, warm stone, brioche, yellow fruits and sweet spices may appear.
Palate: ample, intense and highly textured, with rich substance carried by vibrant acidity. Flavours of citrus, exotic fruits, pear, flowers and creamy notes stretch into a long, fresh, mineral and persistent finish.
97/100 — James Suckling
James Suckling describes Château Pape Clément Blanc 2013 as a wine with remarkable aromas of papaya, lemon and pear, lifted by creamy nuances. His review highlights an ample, highly intense and particularly complex palate, with vibrant freshness, great persistence and energy that places it among the finest white wines of the vintage.
Expression of the 2013 vintage
The 2013 vintage was more challenging for Bordeaux reds, but it produced very fine dry white wines, driven by freshness, aromatic definition and tension. This Pape Clément Blanc stands out for its balance between textured richness, bright fruit and a fresh finish. It can be enjoyed today, ideally served cool but not over-chilled, after a short aeration in the glass.
In summary: an ample, vibrant and refined Château Pape Clément Blanc 2013, awarded 97 points by James Suckling, marked by exotic fruits, ripe citrus, Sémillon texture and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: roasted lobster, langoustines, scallops, turbot with beurre blanc, creamy poultry, sweetbreads, citrus-based cuisine, matured pressed cheeses or aged Comté.
