Château Canon – Premier Grand Cru Classé
A Premier Grand Cru Classé at the pinnacle of elegance, uniting a legendary limestone terroir with contemporary precision.
A historic estate elevated by modern precision
Set on the prestigious limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, Château Canon stands as an undisputed benchmark among the Premier Grands Crus Classés. Owned by Chanel since 1996, the estate has soared to new heights under the guidance of Nicolas Audebert, winemaker and managing director, who combines elegance, discipline and long-term vision. Classified Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1954, Canon is today regarded as one of the most refined and distinctive wines of Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
An exceptional limestone terroir in the heart of the village
The vineyard covers 34 hectares in a single block, directly adjoining the medieval village of Saint-Émilion. The soils are composed of limestone with fossilized starfish — one of Bordeaux’s most noble terroirs — renowned for imparting linearity, freshness and exceptional ageing potential to the wines.

Winemaking & ageing — Purity and balance
Each parcel is vinified separately to reveal its terroir identity. Gentle, natural fermentations and measured extraction are followed by 16 to 18 months of barrel ageing in French oak (≈ 50% new). The aim is to preserve the brilliance of the fruit, the limestone backbone and the refined texture.
Style & signature
- Nose: raspberry, violet, warm stone, infusion.
- Palate: finely chiseled texture, elegant tannins, vibrant limestone minerality.
- Finish: long, persistent, saline and harmonious.
This wine combines intensity and finesse, making it one of the most sought-after Saint-Émilion crus among fine wine collectors.
Wines of the estate
Château Canon
The Grand Vin. A masterful expression of limestone: intense yet weightless. Its ageing potential often exceeds 20 years, while its grace can shine from youth in great vintages.
Croix Canon (formerly Clos Canon)
The second wine, from neighbouring parcels. Accessible earlier, it retains the crystalline purity and finesse that define Canon’s signature.
