Château Canon 2015 — Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

This Château Canon 2015 is one of the great contemporary successes of this historic Saint-Émilion estate. In a sunny, generous and remarkably balanced vintage, Canon delivers a wine of depth, floral elegance and precision, shaped by the natural refinement of its limestone plateau.

The blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc gives a Saint-Émilion that is ample, silky and vibrant. Ripe dark fruit, limestone freshness, violet, graphite, liquorice and spice come together in a long, refined palate built for graceful evolution.

Terroir: the limestone depth of Saint-Émilion

Château Canon draws its identity from the great limestone terroirs of Saint-Émilion. This foundation gives the wine its tension, salinity, verticality and the mineral elegance that distinguishes the finest vintages of the estate.

Merlot brings flesh, velvety texture, black cherry and ripe plum, while Cabernet Franc reinforces floral freshness, aromatic precision and length. Ageing for around 18 months, with a significant proportion of new oak barrels, supports the richness of the vintage without masking the finesse of the terroir.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet red with ruby and purple reflections, dense, brilliant and still beautifully sustained, with visual intensity that reflects the ripeness of the vintage.

Nose: pure, expressive and refined, with black cherry, blackberry, plum, cassis, violet, rose, liquorice, graphite, sweet spices, cocoa and a well-integrated touch of noble oak. With aeration, nuances of blond tobacco, cedar, truffle, fresh mint and limestone may appear.

Palate: ample, silky and perfectly balanced, with deep substance, fine tannins, beautiful limestone freshness and remarkable length. The wine combines richness and precision, with a persistent finish over dark fruits, flowers, spices, graphite and an elegant saline sensation.

Expert review

98/100 — James Suckling

James Suckling awarded 98/100 to Château Canon 2015, confirming the outstanding quality of this vintage for the estate. Wine Advocate also gave it 97/100, while Wine Enthusiast awarded it 97/100. The wine is praised for its purity of fruit, aromatic brightness, refined tannins, depth and remarkable balance.

Expression of the 2015 vintage

The 2015 vintage gives Canon a sunny, generous and particularly harmonious expression. Fruit ripeness brings density and velvety texture, while the limestone plateau preserves freshness, straightness and elegance. Already seductive through its balance, it will gain further complexity with cellaring, developing notes of truffle, cedar, tobacco, dried violet, cocoa, graphite and preserved dark fruits.

In summary: a Château Canon 2015 awarded 98 points by James Suckling, blended from 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, marked by black cherry, violet, graphite, liquorice, silky texture, fine limestone freshness and excellent ageing potential.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, roast pigeon, veal with morels, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, black truffle, porcini, reduced sauces or mature hard cheeses.
