Château Canon 2016 — Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, Magnum

This Château Canon 2016 in magnum embodies one of the finest contemporary achievements of this historic Saint-Émilion estate. In a vintage of remarkable precision, Canon delivers a wine that is deep, floral, mineral and exceptionally refined in its tannic structure, shaped by the natural balance of the limestone plateau.

The blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc gives a Saint-Émilion of great refinement, less demonstrative than some more opulent vintages, yet remarkable for its purity, energy and depth. The magnum 1.5 L format encourages slower, more harmonious evolution, making it ideal for preserving freshness, aromatic depth and long-term ageing potential.

Terroir: the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion

Château Canon draws its identity from the great limestone terroirs of Saint-Émilion. This foundation gives the wine its tension, salinity, verticality and mineral freshness, all of which define the finest expressions of Canon. Merlot brings flesh, black cherry, plum and velvety texture, while Cabernet Franc reinforces floral lift, precision and length.

The 2016 vintage stands out for its exceptional balance between ripeness, freshness and structure. Ageing for 18 months with 65% new oak barrels supports the wine’s substance without dominating it, allowing the purity of the fruit, floral notes, limestone frame and fine tannins to fully express themselves.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet red with ruby and purple reflections, dense, brilliant and still very youthful in its brightness, particularly well preserved by the magnum format.

Nose: pure, floral and highly precise, with violet, rose, kirsch, black cherry, blackberry, plum, cassis, liquorice, fine spices, chocolate, graphite and a touch of noble earth. With aeration, nuances of blond tobacco, cedar, truffle, fresh mint and limestone may appear.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, silky, straight and remarkably tense, with very fine tannins, deep substance and impressive mineral energy. The wine stands out for its precision, persistence and sense of freshness, with a long, floral, saline and delicately spicy finish.

Expert review

98+/100 — Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW describes Château Canon 2016 as a wine of great sophistication, marked by striking aromas of violet, red rose, kirsch, black cherry, chocolate, liquorice, plum and spice. The palate impresses with layers of perfumed dark fruits, bright red fruits, extremely fine tannins, remarkable tension and a very long, energetic finish. Wine Enthusiast also awarded it 98/100, while Decanter and James Suckling each gave it 97/100.

Expression of the 2016 vintage and the value of magnum

The 2016 vintage gives Canon a particularly accomplished expression: pure fruit, freshness, depth, chiselled tannins and great limestone length. In magnum, the wine evolves more slowly than in a standard bottle, enhancing its appeal for cellaring and collection. It can already be approached after long aeration, but its full potential will unfold gradually, with notes of truffle, cedar, tobacco, dried violet, cocoa, graphite and preserved dark fruits.

In summary: a Château Canon 2016 in magnum, awarded 98+ by Wine Advocate, blended from 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, marked by violet, rose, black cherry, graphite, limestone salinity, very fine tannins and outstanding ageing potential.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, roast pigeon, veal with morels, game birds, slow-cooked beef cheek, black truffle, porcini, reduced sauces or mature hard cheeses.
