Château Canon 2019 — Saint-Émilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, Magnum 1.5 L
This Château Canon 2019, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the most refined expressions of the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. The estate signs a wine of remarkable purity, where the depth of Merlot meets the lift of Cabernet Franc and the mineral freshness of one of the Right Bank’s most sought-after terroirs.
The 2019 vintage offers a superb balance between ripeness, precision and tension. The wine unfolds with radiant fruit, beautifully fine tannins and a distinctive chalky frame. Black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, blackberry, violet, graphite, cocoa, liquorice and sweet spices shape a deep, silky and highly persistent Saint-Émilion, while the magnum format encourages slow and harmonious evolution.
Terroir: the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion
The vineyard of Château Canon lies on clay-limestone soils at the heart of the Saint-Émilion plateau. This geology gives the wine its most recognisable signature: fine texture, natural freshness, controlled depth and a finish often marked by a saline sensation.
The 2019 blend is composed of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. Merlot brings velvet, flesh and ripe fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds precision, floral lift, verticality and structure. Ageing for 18 months, with a measured proportion of new oak, supports the wine without masking the brilliance of the fruit or the clarity of the terroir.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep purple, dense and bright, slowly evolving towards garnet. The magnum format helps preserve the wine’s brilliance and slows its aromatic evolution.
Nose: pure, expressive and already highly complex, with black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, ripe raspberry, blackberry, violet, rose, graphite, liquorice and cocoa. With aeration, nuances of fine cedar, mocha, blond tobacco, fresh mint, light truffle and limestone notes may appear.
Palate: broad, velvety and beautifully composed, with deep substance but no heaviness. Red and black fruits mingle with spice, graphite and a clear chalky minerality. The tannins are fine, ripe and polished, leading to a long, fresh, saline and delicately spicy finish.
100/100 — Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Independent
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW awarded 100/100 to Château Canon 2019, praising its intensity, notes of mocha, violet, liquorice, plum, blue fruits and spice, as well as its full, energetic palate, perfectly ripe tannins and exceptionally long finish. Jane Anson also awarded it 100/100, while Jeb Dunnuck and Decanter rated it 98/100. William Kelley / RobertParker.com and James Suckling both gave it 97/100, confirming the outstanding quality of this vintage.
Expression of the 2019 vintage
In Bordeaux, 2019 produced wines that are ripe yet balanced, with fine concentration and preserved freshness. At Canon, the year particularly highlights the purity of fruit, the softness of the tannins and the limestone vibration of the plateau. The result is a Saint-Émilion that is generous, precise and profoundly elegant.
Still young, this Château Canon 2019 in magnum can already impress after careful aeration, yet its true appeal also lies in its ageing potential. With time, it will develop notes of truffle, fine leather, tobacco, cocoa, cedar, forest floor and melted spices, while retaining the freshness and energy of Saint-Émilion’s great limestone terroir.
In summary: a Château Canon 2019 in magnum 1.5 L, awarded 100 points by Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW and Jane Anson, from a major vintage, marked by black cherry, Morello cherry, violet, graphite, liquorice, cocoa, silky tannins and a long limestone-driven finish.
Food pairings: roast lamb, beef fillet, veal with morels, pigeon, duck breast, fine game, truffle dishes, noble mushrooms, fondant potatoes, aged Comté or gastronomic cuisine built around reduced jus and delicate earthy notes.
