Château Canon 2019 — Saint-Émilion

This Château Canon 2019, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the most refined, profound and luminous expressions of the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion. A Premier Grand Cru Classé with a style of great purity, Canon combines the sensuality of Merlot, the elegance of Cabernet Franc and the mineral freshness of great limestone terroirs: black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, ripe raspberry, blackberry, violet, rose, graphite, chalk, liquorice, cocoa, sweet spices, fine cedar and a long saline finish.

Château Canon is among the most prestigious estates of Saint-Émilion, renowned for wines of great elegance, silky texture and remarkable ageing capacity. The 2019 vintage, ripe, precise and remarkably balanced in Bordeaux, gives here a wine of great aromatic intensity, driven by brilliant fruit, fine tannins and highly distinctive limestone tension. The magnum format encourages slow, harmonious and particularly noble evolution.

The spirit of the wine

A great Saint-Émilion of velvet, precision and depth, where the controlled richness of the 2019 vintage remains carried by the freshness of the limestone plateau. The wine combines ripe red and black fruits, flowers, graphite, chalk, liquorice, cocoa and fine spices, with a broad, silky, balanced and highly persistent palate. The magnum format reinforces its ageing potential, relative freshness and collector character.

Terroir: Saint-Émilion, limestone plateau and Right Bank elegance

The vineyard of Château Canon lies on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, one of the most sought-after terroirs on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Limestone and clay-limestone soils bring natural freshness, mineral tension and a very distinctive texture, at once dense, fine and elongated.

Canon’s style is distinguished by its balance between fruit depth, floral finesse and limestone energy. Merlot brings flesh, velvet, plum, cherry and sensuality; Cabernet Franc contributes precision, freshness, floral notes and structure. In the 2019, vintage ripeness reinforces aromatic brilliance, while the terroir preserves tension, purity and great clarity.

Terroir expression: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Saint-Émilion, limestone plateau, clay, black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, blackberry, violet, graphite, chalk, liquorice and saline freshness.

Château Canon signature: fruit purity, silky texture, floral elegance, depth, limestone precision, fine tannins, balance and very long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep purple slowly evolving towards garnet, bright, dense and still very sustained. In magnum, evolution is generally slower, allowing the wine to preserve brilliance, visual freshness and depth for many years.

Nose: deep, pure and highly expressive, with black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, ripe raspberry, blackberry, fresh black fruits, violet, rose, graphite, chalk, liquorice and cocoa. With aeration, nuances of fine cedar, sweet spices, mocha, blond tobacco, noble earth, light truffle, fresh mint and limestone minerality may appear.

Palate: broad, velvety, precise and beautifully balanced, with ripe fruit carried by clear limestone freshness. Flavours of black cherry, Morello cherry, plum, blackberry, raspberry, liquorice, cocoa, graphite, chalk and spices unfold with intensity and elegance, supported by fine, ripe and polished tannins. The finish is very long, saline, mineral and delicately spicy, with an impression of purity, velvet and great Saint-Émilion nobility.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, ripe raspberry, blackberry, fresh black fruits, deep berries.

Flowers and spices: violet, rose, liquorice, cocoa, mocha, sweet spices, fine cedar, blond tobacco.

Terroir and evolution: graphite, chalk, noble earth, light truffle, fresh mint, limestone minerality, polished tannins, saline freshness.

Overall impression: great Saint-Émilion, deep, silky and precise, with brilliant fruit, velvety texture and a very long mineral finish.

Expression of the 2019 vintage

The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines that are deep, ripe and remarkably balanced, combining fruit richness, preserved freshness and great aromatic precision. In Saint-Émilion, the best crus from limestone terroirs show very fine tension, refined tannins and important ageing capacity. At Canon, this year particularly highlights fruit brilliance, verticality and finesse.

Today, this Château Canon 2019 in magnum remains still young but can already impress through its fruit, velvet and precision after careful aeration. With time, it will gain complexity around notes of truffle, fine leather, tobacco, cocoa, cedar, forest floor, melted spices and chalky minerality, while preserving the purity of red and black fruit.

In summary: a deep, silky and masterful Château Canon 2019 in magnum, driven by the balance of the vintage, the nobility of Saint-Émilion’s limestone plateau and the refined signature of the estate.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, red plum, ripe raspberry, blackberry, violet, rose, graphite, chalk, liquorice, cocoa, fine cedar, light truffle and a very long saline finish.
