Château Lafite Rothschild — The Ultimate Icon of Pauillac

Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most prestigious names in the Médoc and one of the ultimate symbols of great Bordeaux wines. Located in Pauillac, it is one of the First Growths classified in 1855, a distinction that has, for more than a century and a half, confirmed the nobility of its terroir, the consistency of its wines and their exceptional ability to age.

Owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite since the château was acquired by Baron James de Rothschild in 1868, Lafite is today associated with the leadership of Saskia de Rothschild, who succeeded her father Éric de Rothschild in 2018. Technical direction is entrusted to Éric Kohler, guardian of a unique style: depth, purity, tannic finesse and sovereign elegance.

The spirit of the château

A First Growth of rare elegance, where Cabernet Sauvignon reaches an expression of purity, freshness and incomparable nobility. Lafite never seeks demonstration: it seduces through precision of detail, the finesse of its structure, the depth of its fruit and an almost aristocratic length.

Terroir: the deep gravel soils of Pauillac

Lafite’s vineyard covers around 110 to 112 hectares, planted on the deep gravel rises that dominate northern Pauillac. These Garonne gravel soils, mixed with sand and clay depending on the sector, provide remarkable natural drainage and encourage deep vine rooting.

The grape varieties reflect the classic Médoc identity: approximately 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon naturally dominates the Grand Vin blend, bringing verticality, precision, graphite, cassis and ageing capacity. Merlot contributes flesh and suppleness, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot add complexity, spice and nuance.

Terroir expression: Pauillac, deep gravel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, natural drainage, freshness, graphite, cedar and long-lined structure.

Lafite signature: extreme finesse, aromatic purity, silky tannins, Médoc elegance, noble freshness, airy length and outstanding ageing potential.

Viticulture: precision, observation and ecological transition

The vineyard is managed with great parcel precision. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with rigorous grape selection, retaining only the lots capable of expressing the finesse of the terroir. The château also pursues experiments and practices linked to agroecology and biodynamics, in a spirit of observation and adaptation to climate change.

This search for balance is fully in keeping with the Lafite style: preserving freshness, avoiding excessive ripeness, maintaining moderate natural alcohol levels when the vintage allows, and retaining the tannin texture that makes the cru so distinctive.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, blackcurrant, fresh red fruits and precise black fruits.

Médoc nuances: cedar, graphite, pencil lead, blond tobacco, violet, liquorice, fine spices, black tea and floral notes.

Evolution and terroir: truffle, fine leather, noble forest floor, cigar box, discreet smoke, fresh earth, polished tannins and a long mineral finish.

Overall impression: a Pauillac of great breed, more aristocratic than demonstrative, combining depth, freshness, silky texture and legendary longevity.

Vinification and ageing

Vinification is carried out parcel by parcel, with extremely rigorous selection of lots. Depending on the cuvée and vintage, fermentations may take place in wooden, stainless-steel or cement vats, with measured extraction designed to preserve textural finesse and fruit purity.

Harvest: manual and parcel-based, with rigorous grape selection.

Vinification: lots vinified separately, with precise extractions adapted to the vintage.

Ageing of the Grand Vin: generally 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak, carefully managed to preserve the elegance of the cru.

Philosophy: seek balance between Médoc power, tannic finesse, freshness and aromatic depth.

Wine style

The style of Château Lafite Rothschild is immediately recognisable for its elegance. Less opulent than some great Pauillac wines, Lafite favours finesse, Cabernet purity, aromatic freshness and an exceptionally polished tannic structure.

In great vintages, the wine can evolve for several decades, developing notes of cedar, graphite, tobacco, truffle, cigar box and forest floor while retaining remarkable freshness and tension. Its longevity is one of the foundations of its legend.

Emblematic cuvées

Château Lafite Rothschild: the Grand Vin, the ultimate symbol of Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon dominant, long-lined structure, aromas of cassis, cedar, violet, graphite and a sovereign finish.

Carruades de Lafite: the château’s historic second wine, from specific parcels and selections. More accessible in youth, it preserves the purity, precision and elegance of the Lafite style.

Anseillan: a new label launched with the 2018 vintage, produced from the Lafite vineyard. It offers a more immediate and accessible reading of the château’s universe while remaining deeply linked to its terroir.

Benchmark vintages

Lafite’s great years are especially sought after for their ability to combine power, freshness and precision. Among the historic and modern vintages often cited are 1953, 1959, 1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Depending on the vintage, the Grand Vin may require long cellaring before reaching full balance. The greatest bottles can evolve for fifty years or more while retaining the fine grain and freshness that define the Lafite style.
