Château Lafite Rothschild 1986 — Pauillac First Growth
This Château Lafite Rothschild 1986 is one of Pauillac’s great classical monuments. From a vintage built for very long ageing, it expresses the nobility of Cabernet Sauvignon on Lafite’s deep gravel soils: cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, liquorice, minerals, chestnut, black fruits and a finish of exceptional length. This is a Lafite of structure, restraint and depth, more aristocratic than demonstrative.
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild occupies a mythical place in the history of the Médoc. The 1986 vintage, strongly marked by Cabernet Sauvignon, produced a wine of great tannic density, long closed in its youth, but endowed with exceptional energy, freshness and ageing capacity. Even today, a well-preserved bottle remains powerful, deep and remarkably youthful in structure.
A Lafite of great architecture: deep, tannic, mineral and very classical in elegance. The 1986 does not rely on immediate roundness; it imposes its nobility through the precision of black fruit, the freshness of graphite, the complexity of cedar and tobacco, and a long, firm and persistent finish. This is a wine of patience, poise and great Médoc breed.
Terroir: deep gravel, fine clay and the nobility of Pauillac
Château Lafite Rothschild is located in northern Pauillac, close to the border with Saint-Estèphe, on great gravel rises overlooking the Gironde estuary. This terroir of deep gravel, associated with sands, fine clays and limestone or marl subsoils depending on the sector, is particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the major grape variety of the Grand Vin.
The gravel provides drainage, warmth and slow ripening, while the clays bring water reserve and depth. In the 1986, this terroir translates into a very straight expression: cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, minerals, liquorice and firm tannins. The proximity of the estuary helps regulate the climate, preserving freshness and balance in a wine of great concentration.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cassis, blackberry, graphite, cedar, tobacco, minerals, liquorice and great structural freshness.
1986 blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot, with around 20 months of ageing in new oak barrels.
Tasting notes
Appearance: dark ruby to deep garnet, still dense and sustained for its age in well-preserved bottles. Brick reflections are beginning to appear at the rim, but the depth of colour remains remarkable for a 1986 Pauillac.
Nose: noble, penetrating and highly classical, with cassis, blackberry, black fruits, cedar, tobacco, cigar box, graphite, minerals, chestnut, liquorice and a touch of violet. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, forest floor, dark coffee, black olive, sweet spices and light smoke may appear.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, dense, firm and very long, with a texture that is both harmonious and still marked by present tannins. The black fruit remains deep, carried by lively acidity, graphite-like minerality and great freshness. The finish is persistent, straight, tannic and aristocratic, on cassis, cedar, tobacco, liquorice, graphite and spice.
Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, dark berries, ripe but restrained fruit.
Evolution: cedar, tobacco, cigar box, fine leather, forest floor, dark coffee, black olive.
Terroir: graphite, minerals, chestnut, liquorice, sweet spices, firm tannins and a very long finish.
Overall impression: legendary Pauillac, deep, classical and still structured, more vertical than voluptuous.
Expression of the 1986 vintage
The 1986 vintage in Bordeaux is renowned for its structure, concentration and ageing potential, with outstanding success for Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc. At Lafite, it produced a deep, rich, extracted and tannic wine, yet one that is remarkably harmonious in its architecture. Its reputation rests as much on its power as on its ability to preserve the refined elegance of the château.
Today, Château Lafite Rothschild 1986 should still be approached with patience depending on the bottle. A well-preserved example will offer a wine of impressive relative youth, with tannins that remain firm and exceptional length. It should be opened carefully, tasted immediately, then given measured aeration in order to preserve its balance and aromatic nobility.
In summary: a monumental, classical and deeply structured Château Lafite Rothschild 1986, driven by Cabernet Sauvignon, Pauillac gravel and exceptional longevity.
Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, cedar, tobacco, cigar box, graphite, minerals, chestnut, liquorice, fine leather, forest floor, sweet spices and a very long tannic finish.
