Château Lafite Rothschild 1955 — Pauillac First Growth
This Château Lafite Rothschild 1955 is a heritage bottle from a vintage that is now fully mature and sought after for its classical elegance. This is no longer a wine of demonstrative power, but rather the grace of an old great Pauillac: pale evolved colour, refined bouquet, cedar, delicate red fruits, strawberry, Morello cherry, rose petals, pencil lead, blond tobacco, fine leather, minerals and a soft, fresh and aristocratic finish.
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the most mythical names in the Médoc. The 1955 belongs to those old Lafites whose charm lies in finesse, lightness of touch, balance and aromatic persistence. In the best-preserved bottles, the wine can still offer rare emotion, with delicate substance, fully melted tannins and remarkably preserved freshness.
An old, delicate and moving Lafite, to be appreciated for its patina rather than its power. The 1955 seduces through its distinction, melted bouquet, balance and soft texture. The finest bottles show a gentle entry, exquisite flavour, perfect weight and a graceful finish, carried by cedar, faded rose, red fruit, pencil lead, tobacco and minerality.
Terroir: Lafite’s deep gravel and the finesse of Pauillac
Château Lafite Rothschild is located in northern Pauillac, close to Saint-Estèphe and the Gironde estuary. The vineyard lies on great rises of fine, deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sands, with limestone, clay or marl subsoils depending on the sector. These poor, well-draining soils are particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety of the Grand Vin.
In a 1955 bottle, this terroir is no longer expressed through tannic force, but through persistence, freshness and aromatic complexity. The gravel brings line, pencil lead, graphite and minerality; age reveals cedar, tobacco, leather, rose petals, delicate red fruits and a texture that has become silky and almost fragile.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cedar, pencil lead, minerals, delicate red fruits, tobacco, fine leather, faded rose and persistent freshness.
Lafite signature: aristocratic restraint, perfume finesse, delicate texture, melted tannins, balance and length rather than power.
Tasting notes
Appearance: pale ruby to evolved garnet, with a wide brick or tawny rim depending on storage. The finest bottles may retain a beautiful mature colour, clear but still alive, while more fragile bottles will naturally show more amber tones.
Nose: refined, mature and delicate, with cedar, strawberry, Morello cherry, softened red fruits, crushed rose petals, pencil lead, blond tobacco, fine leather, minerals and a touch of forest floor. With aeration, nuances of cigar box, sweet spices, dry leaf, black tea, noble mushroom and fine earth may appear.
Palate: light to medium-bodied today, soft, harmonious and very elegant when the bottle is sound. The tannins are light and fully melted, the acidity remains well judged and brings freshness, while red fruit, cedar, tobacco, pencil lead and floral notes extend into a fine, graceful and delicately persistent finish. The wine seduces through balance and charm rather than concentration.
Fruit: strawberry, Morello cherry, softened red fruits, delicate fruit, lightly candied and mature.
Evolution: cedar, blond tobacco, fine leather, cigar box, dry leaf, black tea, forest floor.
Terroir: pencil lead, graphite, minerals, rose petals, fine earth, melted tannins and a fresh finish.
Overall impression: old, graceful, refined and fully mature Lafite, more fragile and subtle than powerful.
Expression of the 1955 vintage
The 1955 vintage in Bordeaux produced classical wines that are now highly dependent on storage. At Lafite, tastings of fine bottles highlight a mature wine, rather pale in colour, with a rich and exquisite bouquet, a soft entry, delicious flavour, ideal weight and remarkable balance. Other notes emphasise strawberry, Morello cherry, rose petals, pencil lead and perfectly judged acidity.
Today, Château Lafite Rothschild 1955 should be approached as an old bottle of great delicacy. Provenance, level, colour and cork condition are essential. It is best to stand the bottle upright for several hours before service, open it with extreme care, taste immediately and limit aeration. Very gentle decanting may be considered only to separate the sediment.
In summary: a rare, mature and deeply elegant Château Lafite Rothschild 1955, to be appreciated for its refined bouquet, balance and old-Pauillac grace.
Dominant aromas: cedar, strawberry, Morello cherry, delicate red fruits, rose petals, pencil lead, blond tobacco, fine leather, minerals, forest floor, black tea and a fresh aristocratic finish.
