Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2014

An absolute icon of Australian wine, Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2014 embodies Penfolds’ historic vision: a great South Australian Shiraz, built not around a single vineyard, but through a multi-regional selection designed to achieve depth, power, consistency and longevity.

Composed of 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, this vintage combines dark, dense and velvety fruit with an imposing tannic structure. Still young in the spirit of Grange, the 2014 stands out for its intensity, spice-driven profile, noble ageing in new American oak and outstanding cellaring potential.

Terroir: South Australia, multi-regional blending and the Grange style

Grange is the most emblematic expression of the Penfolds philosophy: blending the finest Shiraz parcels from several great regions of South Australia in order to create a wine that goes beyond a single-site identity. The 2014 vintage brings together fruit from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully, Coonawarra, Clare Valley and Magill Estate.

The wine is matured for 20 months in new American oak barrels, one of the defining signatures of Grange. This ageing brings notes of vanilla, cedar, mocha, cocoa, spice and noble wood, while supporting the natural power of the dark fruit and the wine’s long-term structure.

Tasting notes

Appearance: very deep dark red, almost opaque, with purple and violet reflections still clearly present, revealing the wine’s concentration and relative youth.

Nose: intense and complex, with blackberry, black plum, black cherry, cassis, liquorice, dark chocolate, mocha, cedar, vanilla, pepper, sweet spices, dried herbs and a smoky nuance. With aeration, notes of warm earth, black olive, mint, cocoa and noble wood may appear.

Palate: ample, velvety and deeply concentrated, with a powerful core of dark fruit, dense tannins and a highly structured frame. The finish is long, spicy, toasted and persistent, carried by the richness of Shiraz, the freshness of Cabernet Sauvignon and the classic imprint of American oak.

Expert review

100/100 — Decanter

Decanter awarded a perfect score to Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2014, praising a wine of exceptional depth, marked by warm earth, noble spice and powerful fruit. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate also awarded it 98/100, describing a rich, concentrated and intense Grange, with an ample, velvety palate loaded with ripe dark fruit, framed by vanilla, cedar, powerful tannins and a structure built for very long ageing.

Expression of the 2014 vintage

The 2014 vintage gives a Grange that is massive, structured and remarkably defined. The strict selection of parcels allowed Penfolds to produce a dense, deep and distinctive wine, in a darker, more spicy and more restrained style than some warmer vintages. Still youthful, it will gain complexity with time, gradually developing notes of leather, tapenade, mocha, spice box, smoke, graphite and preserved dark fruits.

In summary: an iconic Penfolds Grange Bin 95 2014, awarded 100 points by Decanter and 98 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, marked by Shiraz power, deep dark fruit, spice, noble American oak and outstanding ageing potential.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb with herbs, grilled Wagyu beef, game, rack of lamb with rosemary, smoked brisket, gently spiced dishes, pepper sauce, mature cheeses or refined Australian cuisine based around grilled meats.
