Château Lafite Rothschild 1988 — Pauillac First Growth

This Château Lafite Rothschild 1988 is a very great classical Pauillac, produced in a vintage of structure, freshness and long ageing potential. Less solar than 1989 or 1990, it expresses with nobility the restraint and precision of the Lafite style: cassis, black fruits, cedar, minerals, graphite, fine herbs, liquorice, tobacco, chestnut, firm tannins and a long, straight and aristocratic finish.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Lafite Rothschild is one of the absolute references of Pauillac. The 1988 belongs to this family of long-reserved Lafites, built on the finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon, the depth of gravel soils and an impressive tannic frame. Today, the finest bottles are beginning to reveal their tertiary complexity while retaining energy, freshness and poise.

The spirit of the wine

A deep, mineral and highly classical Lafite, more vertical than voluptuous. The 1988 seduces through its bouquet of cedar, cassis, dried stone fruits, minerals, subtle herbs, liquorice and graphite. The palate remains concentrated, precise, structured and long, with tannins still present but increasingly integrated in well-preserved bottles.

Terroir: Lafite’s deep gravel and the finesse of Pauillac

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in northern Pauillac, close to Saint-Estèphe and the Gironde estuary. The vineyard lies on great rises of fine, deep gravel, mixed with aeolian sands, with clay-limestone or marl subsoils depending on the sector. These poor, well-draining and well-exposed soils are particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon, the central grape variety of the Grand Vin.

The gravel provides drainage, warmth and slow ripening, while the clays and cooler subsoils contribute water reserve and balance. In the 1988, this terroir translates into a straight, deep and mineral expression: cassis, cedar, graphite, minerals, tobacco, liquorice, fine herbs and great structural freshness. The proximity of the estuary helps preserve steady ripening and fruit elegance.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, cassis, cedar, minerals, graphite, tobacco, liquorice, fine herbs and great tannic length.

Lafite signature: aristocratic restraint, aromatic finesse, precise tannins, freshness, minerality and persistence rather than demonstrative power.

Tasting notes

Appearance: dark ruby to evolved garnet, still deep and sustained in well-preserved bottles. Brick reflections are beginning to appear at the rim, but the colour retains remarkable density and an impression of great poise.

Nose: noble, classical and complex, with cedar, cassis, black fruits, dried stone fruits, minerals, graphite, liquorice, subtle herbs, tobacco and chestnut. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, cigar box, forest floor, black olive, dark coffee, light mint, sweet spices and discreet smoke may appear.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, concentrated, precise and still structured. The tannins remain present, but they are gradually melting into a straight, harmonious and very fresh core. Black fruit, cedar, liquorice, graphite and minerals extend into a long, savoury, lightly mentholated, firm and caressing finish, with true Pauillac depth.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, dark berries, dried stone fruits.

Evolution: cedar, tobacco, cigar box, fine leather, forest floor, dark coffee, black olive.

Terroir: minerals, graphite, chestnut, liquorice, fine herbs, light mint, firm tannins and long finish.

Overall impression: classical, deep, mineral and still structured Lafite, with great aristocratic elegance.

Expression of the 1988 vintage

The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux produced firm, structured and highly classical wines, often less immediately seductive than 1989 or 1990 but endowed with strong ageing potential. At Lafite, the result is a concentrated, long, tannic and very precise wine, regularly cited among the great successes of the vintage for its balance between depth, freshness and elegance.

Today, Château Lafite Rothschild 1988 is entering a very interesting phase of maturity while still retaining notable structure. A fine bottle can offer a great balance between black fruit, cedar, tobacco, minerality, fine leather and length. It should be opened with care, tasted immediately, then given measured aeration in order to preserve its freshness and aromatic nobility.

In summary: a classical, deep and remarkably structured Château Lafite Rothschild 1988, driven by the freshness of the vintage, Pauillac gravel and the nobility of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, cedar, dried stone fruits, minerals, graphite, liquorice, tobacco, chestnut, fine leather, forest floor, fine herbs and a long tannic finish.
