Finca Altamira Malbec 2000 — Achaval-Ferrer

This Finca Altamira Malbec 2000 from Achaval-Ferrer embodies a rare, profound and historically important expression of Argentine Malbec. From the Altamira terroir in Mendoza’s Uco Valley, this wine combines the natural concentration of old vines, altitude freshness and a highly distinctive mineral identity: blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, violet, liquorice, cocoa, blond tobacco, fine leather, sweet spices, black mint, noble earth, graphite and a long mineral finish.

Achaval-Ferrer is one of the estates that helped reveal the potential of Argentina’s great single-vineyard Malbecs, with wines that are deep, precise and capable of standing alongside major international ageworthy cuvées. Finca Altamira represents one of the estate’s most sought-after expressions, highlighting a high-altitude terroir of great purity, where fruit density remains carried by fresh tension and mineral structure. The 2000 vintage, now mature, offers an evolved, complex and patrimonial reading of this emblematic cuvée.

The spirit of the wine

A great Argentine Malbec of depth, maturity and nobility, where the natural richness of Altamira has merged into elegant tertiary complexity. The wine combines time-polished black fruits, violet, cocoa, tobacco, fine leather, liquorice, graphite, noble earth and spices, with a broad, velvety, structured and persistent palate. It is a rare, mature and deeply expressive cuvée from an Andean terroir.

Terroir: Altamira, altitude, stony soils and Malbec intensity

The Altamira sector, in the south of the Uco Valley, is one of Mendoza’s most renowned terroirs for Malbec. Its alluvial, stony and limestone-rich soils, combined with altitude and strong diurnal temperature variation, make it possible to produce wines that are concentrated, fresh, textured and profoundly mineral. The fruit reaches full ripeness while retaining tension and precision.

At Achaval-Ferrer, Finca Altamira is distinguished by a dense yet refined expression of Malbec, where fruit power never obscures the freshness of the terroir. With the evolution of the 2000 vintage, black-fruit notes have gained nuances of leather, tobacco, cocoa, graphite, light truffle and noble earth, while preserving remarkable depth.

Terroir expression: Malbec, Altamira, Uco Valley, Mendoza, altitude, alluvial soils, stones, limestone, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black plum, violet, graphite, cocoa and mineral freshness.

Achaval-Ferrer signature: concentration, fruit purity, depth, velvety texture, single-vineyard precision, altitude freshness, complexity, balance and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet evolving towards mahogany and slightly brick-toned reflections depending on storage, still sustained in fine examples. The colour reflects the original concentration of Malbec, the depth of the Altamira terroir and a gradual evolution towards a refined tertiary expression.

Nose: deep, mature and complex, with blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, time-polished black fruits, violet, liquorice, cocoa, blond tobacco and fine leather. With aeration, nuances of graphite, black mint, sweet spices, sweet pepper, noble earth, forest floor, light truffle and balsamic notes may appear.

Palate: broad, velvety, fresh and still structured, with black fruit now polished by evolution. Flavours of blackberry, cassis, blueberry, plum, cocoa, tobacco, fine leather, liquorice, graphite, noble earth and spices unfold with depth, supported by polished and persistent tannins. The finish is long, lightly saline, mineral and spicy, with an impression of noble maturity, controlled power and great Andean depth.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, time-polished black fruits, evolved dark berries.

Ageing and spices: cocoa, liquorice, blond tobacco, fine leather, sweet spices, sweet pepper, balsamic notes.

Terroir and evolution: violet, graphite, black mint, noble earth, forest floor, light truffle, polished tannins, mineral freshness.

Expression of the 2000 vintage

The 2000 vintage now belongs fully to the world of collectible Argentine wines, where provenance, storage and level of evolution play an essential role. At this stage, Finca Altamira places greater emphasis on tertiary complexity, the patina of fruit and terroir depth than on the primary power of young Malbec.

Today, this Finca Altamira Malbec 2000 should be approached with gentle opening and measured aeration. A well-preserved example can offer a rare experience built around time-polished black fruits, dried violet, cocoa, fine leather, blond tobacco, graphite, light truffle, spices and the mineral freshness of Altamira.

In summary: a rare, mature and deeply expressive Finca Altamira Malbec 2000, driven by the nobility of the Altamira terroir, the depth of Malbec and Achaval-Ferrer’s historic signature.

Dominant aromas: blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black plum, black cherry, violet, cocoa, blond tobacco, fine leather, liquorice, graphite, black mint, light truffle and a long mineral finish.
