James Berry Vineyard Red 2018 — Saxum Vineyards
The James Berry Vineyard Red 2018 from Saxum Vineyards is one of the most sought-after cuvées in Paso Robles. Sourced from Justin Smith’s legendary family vineyard, this Californian red combines power, aromatic purity and mineral precision in a broad, intense and remarkably balanced style.
The 2018 vintage offers a particularly successful expression of James Berry Vineyard. Dark fruit, wild strawberry, blueberry, black cherry, candied violet, liquorice, new leather, Provençal herbs, spice and limestone notes shape a deep, silky and very long wine, still youthful yet already impressively coherent.
The great terroir of James Berry Vineyard
Located in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, James Berry Vineyard sits on white limestone soils with fossilized shells. Altitude, poor soils and ocean influence bring freshness, tension and relief to wines that are naturally rich and structured.
The 2018 blend brings together 64% Grenache, 16% Mataro, 14% Syrah and 6% Carignan. Grenache contributes fruit brilliance and texture, Mataro reinforces structure and wild nuances, Syrah adds depth and spice, while Carignan brings energy and tension.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep purple with violet reflections, dense, bright and still very youthful.
Nose: intense and highly expressive, with blueberry, wild strawberry, black cherry, blackberry, violet, liquorice, new leather and Provençal herbs. With air, notes of anise, coffee, fresh earth, gentle spice and warm stone emerge.
Palate: broad, silky and explosive, with remarkable concentration but also surprising freshness. The tannins are dense, polished and perfectly integrated, leading to a very long, spicy, mineral and floral finish.
99/100 — Jeb Dunnuck
98/100 — Vinous
97/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
97/100 — Wine Spectator
Critics describe James Berry Vineyard 2018 as exceptional: pure, intense, silky and perfectly balanced. Jeb Dunnuck highlights the depth of fruit, violet, liquorice, leather and Provençal herb notes, while Vinous emphasizes its layered perfume, unexpected freshness and very long finish.
The 2018 vintage and ageing potential
The 2018 vintage gives a deep, ripe and concentrated wine, yet less massive than some warmer years. The balance between richness, freshness and texture makes this cuvée particularly compelling, with significant ageing potential.
Still young, this James Berry Vineyard can be opened with gradual aeration, but it will gain complexity after several more years in the cellar. Serve at around 16 to 17°C, in large glasses, to preserve its aromatic energy and silky texture.
Key points: a Saxum James Berry Vineyard Red 2018, rated up to 99/100, blending Grenache, Mataro, Syrah and Carignan in a deep, limestone-driven, silky and age-worthy style.
Food pairings: grilled côte de bœuf, roast lamb with herbs, Iberian pork, beef short ribs, lacquered duck, game, premium barbecue, gently spiced cuisine, roasted root vegetables or mature cheeses.
