For Her 2017 — L’Aventure Winery

The For Her 2017 from L’Aventure Winery is one of Stephan Asseo’s most exclusive Paso Robles cuvées. Produced in very small quantities, this wine reflects the estate’s distinctive vision: Rhône-inspired intensity, Californian generosity, limestone-driven freshness and the precision of a winemaker shaped by Bordeaux.

The 2017 blend brings together 54% Syrah, 32% Graciano and 14% Viognier, all co-fermented and aged for 14 months in French oak. The result is a powerful, exotic and deeply aromatic red, combining black and blue fruit, violet, candied orange peel, spice, licorice and a long, polished mineral finish.

L’Aventure, a cult estate on the west side of Paso Robles

Located in the Willow Creek District, on the cooler western side of Paso Robles, L’Aventure Winery has become one of California’s most sought-after estates for bold, refined and highly original blends. The calcareous soils, low yields and careful vineyard work give the wines both richness and precision.

For Her 2017 stands apart through its unusual blend. The Syrah gives depth, dark fruit and structure; Graciano brings colour, spice and energy; while the Viognier lifts the aromatics with floral and citrus notes. With only around 250 cases produced, it is a true collector’s bottle from L’Aventure.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep violet-purple with dark ruby reflections, dense, brilliant and still remarkably youthful.

Nose: expressive and exotic, with blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry, black cherry, violet, ground pepper, melted licorice and candied orange peel. With air, notes of incense, spice, dark flowers and mineral earth add further complexity.

Palate: rich, full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with impressive fruit purity, a velvety texture and polished tannins. The finish is long, vibrant and spicy, carried by dark berries, floral notes, citrus lift and a persistent mineral impression.

Expert view

99/100 — Jeb Dunnuck
97/100 — Vinous
95/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Jeb Dunnuck describes the 2017 For Her as one of the great successes of the vintage, praising its exotic black and blue fruit, pepper, licorice, candied orange peel, rich texture and impeccable balance. Vinous highlights its violet colour, blackberry and boysenberry aromas, exotic spice, candied violet, incense and long, vibrant finish. Wine Advocate underlines the co-fermented blend, its silky palate, fresh lift and layered red, blue and black fruit profile.

The 2017 vintage and serving advice

The 2017 vintage gives For Her a ripe, generous and highly expressive profile, while retaining the freshness and aromatic lift that define the best wines from L’Aventure. The wine is already impressive today, but its concentration, balance and tannic polish also support further ageing.

Open one to two hours in advance, or decant briefly if the wine appears compact. Serve at around 16 to 17°C in large glasses to preserve its fruit intensity, floral aromatics and mineral length.

Key point: a rare L’Aventure Winery micro-cuvée, rated up to 99/100, blending Syrah, Graciano and Viognier in a rich, exotic, floral and impeccably balanced Paso Robles style.

Food pairings: grilled ribeye, herb-roasted lamb, glazed beef short ribs, spiced duck, Iberian pork, game, premium barbecue, pepper-based sauces, roasted mushrooms or mature cheeses.
