Château Cos d’Estournel 1999 — Saint-Estèphe, Magnum

This Château Cos d’Estournel 1999, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, delivers a mature, classical and refined expression of Saint-Estèphe. A Second Growth with an instantly recognisable style, Cos d’Estournel combines Médoc depth with a distinctive spicy signature, marked by cassis, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine leather and oriental spice notes.

The 1999 vintage, more elegant than massive, now shows a harmonious and delicately evolved profile. The magnum format has encouraged slower evolution, preserving freshness, fruit definition and the nobility of the structure. A mature bottle to open with care, offering the tertiary complexity of a great Saint-Estèphe.

Terroir: Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel and Médoc freshness

The Cos d’Estournel vineyard lies on deep gravel rises with clay-rich subsoils, a combination that gives the wines power, structure and ageing capacity. In this vintage, the blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing tension, cassis and graphite, supported by Merlot, which adds flesh, roundness and depth.

The château’s signature remains clearly present: a refined, spicy and subtly exotic style, here softened by time. The wine now favours balance, freshness, polished tannins and evolved complexity rather than immediate power.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet, with mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution. The magnum format still preserves fine visual intensity.

Nose: elegant and evolved, with cassis, blackberry, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine leather, liquorice, sweet spices and noble earth. With aeration, nuances of mocha, undergrowth, subtle truffle, incense and precious wood may appear.

Palate: ample, fresh and structured, with tannins now polished and a substance elegantly softened by maturity. Dark fruit remains present, joined by cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather and spices. The finish is long, mineral and persistent, in a register of noble maturity and Médoc classicism.

Expert review

92/100 — Neal Martin, Vinous

Neal Martin describes Château Cos d’Estournel 1999 as a wine with a well-defined bouquet, requiring a few moments in the glass to reveal itself. His review highlights notes of melted tar, cigar humidor, dark fruit and a more earthy evolution with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, linear, masculine and structured, with an expression that remains very faithful to the character of Saint-Estèphe. A mature Cos d’Estournel now on its ideal drinking plateau.

Expression of the 1999 vintage

The 1999 vintage in Bordeaux produced classical, elegant and more approachable wines than the great years of power. In Saint-Estèphe, Cos d’Estournel retains fine structure, Médoc freshness and refined tertiary complexity. In magnum, this bottle gains further poise, depth and balance of evolution.

In summary: a mature, elegant and spicy Château Cos d’Estournel 1999 in magnum, awarded 92 points by Neal Martin, marked by cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather and the freshness of Saint-Estèphe.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
