Château Cos d’Estournel 2016 — Saint-Estèphe

This Château Cos d’Estournel 2016 embodies one of the deepest, most refined and most masterful expressions of Saint-Estèphe. A Second Growth with an immediately recognisable style, Cos d’Estournel combines Médoc power, the precision of great gravel terroirs and a singular spicy signature: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa, liquorice, oriental spices, violet, noble earth and a long mineral finish.

Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the great historic names of the Médoc, renowned for wines that are deep, structured, aromatically complex and capable of ageing for several decades. The 2016 vintage is one of Bordeaux’s greatest recent vintages, remarkable for its balance between ripeness, freshness, density and tannic finesse. In Saint-Estèphe, this year produced wines of great precision, powerful yet perfectly controlled, with exceptional ageing capacity.

The spirit of the wine

A great Saint-Estèphe of depth, precision and nobility, where the power of Cabernet Sauvignon remains carried by remarkable freshness and a highly refined texture. The 2016 combines ripe black fruits, cassis, violet, graphite, cedar, tobacco, liquorice and spices, with a dense, velvety, straight and highly persistent palate. It is a Cos d’Estournel built for long ageing, at once monumental, balanced and remarkably elegant.

Terroir: Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel and controlled power

The vineyard of Cos d’Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe, in the northern Médoc, on deep gravel rises resting on clay subsoils. This combination gives wines that are powerful, structured and capable of preserving remarkable freshness. The gravel favours drainage and Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness, while the clay brings density, depth and texture.

The style of Cos d’Estournel combines the classical firmness of Saint-Estèphe with a more exotic and spicy aromatic dimension. Cabernet Sauvignon brings cassis, graphite, cedar, tension and structure; Merlot contributes roundness, flesh and fruit depth. In the 2016, the terroir is expressed with exceptional purity: intense black fruit, chiselled tannins, mineral freshness and a long, spicy and majestic finish.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel, clay, cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, violet, oriental spices and mineral freshness.

Cos d’Estournel signature: controlled power, fruit depth, noble structure, distinctive spice, polished tannins, freshness, complexity and very long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep purple with garnet and black reflections, dense, bright and still very youthful. The colour reflects the concentration of the 2016 vintage, the depth of the Saint-Estèphe terroir and the wine’s capacity to evolve slowly over several decades.

Nose: deep, pure and highly expressive, with cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, black cherry, black fruits, violet, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa and liquorice. With aeration, nuances of precious woods, oriental spices, sweet pepper, mocha, fine leather, noble earth, black mint, incense and gravel minerality may appear.

Palate: full, dense, velvety and perfectly balanced, with intense black fruit carried by remarkable freshness. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, blueberry, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, cocoa, liquorice and spices unfold with depth, supported by ripe, fine and highly structuring tannins. The finish is long, mineral, spicy and persistent, with an impression of controlled power, precision and great Médoc nobility.

Expression of the 2016 vintage

The 2016 vintage in Bordeaux is recognised for its exceptional balance between ripeness, concentration, freshness and tannic finesse. In Saint-Estèphe, it produced wines of great depth, with ripe tannins, preserved acidity and remarkable aromatic precision. At Cos d’Estournel, the 2016 stands out for its intensity, luxurious texture, mineral energy and very long persistence.

Today, this Château Cos d’Estournel 2016 remains very young and has immense ageing potential. It can already impress through its purity, density and balance after careful aeration, but its true complexity will develop with time: cedar, tobacco, fine leather, graphite, cocoa, truffle, forest floor, melted spices, incense and mineral nuances should gradually join the depth of black fruit.

In summary: a deep, precise and monumental Château Cos d’Estournel 2016, driven by one of Bordeaux’s great recent vintages, the power of Saint-Estèphe and the spicy signature of this great Médoc estate.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, blueberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, cocoa, liquorice, violet, oriental spices, fine leather and a long mineral finish.
