Château Cos d’Estournel 2001 — Saint-Estèphe, Magnum
This Château Cos d’Estournel 2001, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, delivers a mature, deep and refined expression of Saint-Estèphe. A Second Growth with a distinctive identity, Cos d’Estournel combines Médoc structure with a spicy aromatic signature, marked by dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, smoky notes and fine mineral freshness.
The 2001 vintage, more classical and less solar than 2000, now stands out for its balance, poise and elegant evolution. The magnum format has encouraged slower maturation, preserving freshness, fruit precision and the nobility of the tannins.
Terroir: Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel and Médoc structure
The Cos d’Estournel vineyard lies on deep gravel rises with clay-rich subsoils, producing wines that are structured, dense and capable of retaining remarkable freshness. In 2001, the blend brings together 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, with a significant proportion of Merlot adding flesh, suppleness and depth.
Initially powerful and marked by ageing in oak, the wine has gradually rounded out with time. It now shows a more silky, velvety and harmonious profile, with a long finish and an expression that remains very faithful to the character of Saint-Estèphe.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet, with mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution. The magnum format still preserves fine intensity and sustained visual presence.
Nose: expressive and complex, with dark fruits, plum, redcurrant jelly, dried cherry, ripe cassis, cedar, tobacco, tapenade, dried herbs, fine leather and smoky notes. With aeration, nuances of mint, dried rose, graphite, undergrowth and noble earth may appear.
Palate: medium-bodied, fresh and highly harmonious, with fine tannins, polished substance and fine energy. Evolved red and dark fruit remains present, accompanied by dried herbs, tobacco, cedar and mineral notes. The finish is long, fresh and elegantly saline.
94/100 — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes Château Cos d’Estournel 2001 as a wine with a deep garnet colour and a highly expressive nose, combining smoky notes, tapenade, bay leaf, meat juices, preserved plum, redcurrant jelly, dried cherry, ripe cassis, peppermint and dried rose. The palate is medium-bodied, vibrant, fresh and structured, with fine-grained tannins and a very long, mineral and persistent finish.
Expression of the 2001 vintage
The 2001 vintage gives Cos d’Estournel a more classical, fresh and structured expression than the most opulent years. Today, the wine sits on a beautiful plateau of maturity, with refined tertiary complexity, polished tannins and still remarkable freshness. Gradual opening is preferable to prolonged decanting, in order to preserve the finesse of the fruit and the delicacy of its evolution.
In summary: a mature, fresh and structured Château Cos d’Estournel 2001 in magnum, awarded 94 points by The Wine Advocate, marked by evolved dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, smoky notes and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
