Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 — Saint-Estèphe

This Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 embodies a powerful, structured and deeply classical expression of Saint-Estèphe. A great ageing vintage in the Médoc, 1986 produced a dense, tannic and long-lived Cos, shaped by Cabernet Sauvignon, dark fruits, liquorice, graphite, smoky notes, cedar and a strong Médoc identity.

Today, this bottle stands as a mature great Bordeaux, to be approached with care according to its state of preservation. The blend indicated for this vintage brings together 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, in a firmer and more structured style than the immediately surrounding vintages.

Terroir: Saint-Estèphe, Cabernet Sauvignon and ageing structure

The Cos d’Estournel vineyard lies on deep gravel rises with clay-rich subsoils, producing wines that are powerful, structured and capable of retaining great freshness. In 1986, the high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon reinforces the wine’s backbone, graphite expression, tannic firmness and ability to evolve very slowly.

The style of Cos d’Estournel is clearly recognisable here through its depth, spicy character and intensity. With age, the initial power has gradually softened, revealing more cedar, tobacco, fine leather, evolved dark fruit, noble earth and smoky nuances.

Tasting notes

Appearance: dark garnet with mahogany and brick reflections depending on evolution, still showing notable intensity when the bottle has been well preserved.

Nose: deep and evolved, with cassis, ripe plum, liquorice, graphite, cedar, tobacco, smoky notes and warm earth. With aeration, nuances of fine leather, undergrowth, spices, mocha, subtle truffle and black pepper may appear.

Palate: structured, dense and still marked by the frame of Cabernet Sauvignon, with tannins now softened but still present. The wine retains fine depth, Médoc freshness and a long, spicy, liquorice-driven and slightly smoky finish.

Expert review

95/100 — Robert Parker Jr., The Wine Advocate

Robert Parker Jr. describes Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 as a highly extracted, dark-coloured wine, marked by toasted and smoky notes, ripe plum, liquorice and cassis. His review highlights very slow evolution, massive substance, significant concentration, great depth and more power, weight and tannin than the 1985 vintage. A dense, strongly structured and age-worthy Cos d’Estournel, emblematic of the Médoc character of 1986.

Expression of the 1986 vintage

The 1986 vintage in Bordeaux is renowned for its structure, concentration and longevity, particularly in the Médoc, where Cabernet Sauvignon often produced very firm and profound wines. Today, this Cos d’Estournel should be opened with care, without prolonged decanting, in order to preserve the finesse of its evolved aromas and the balance of the bottle.

In summary: a mature, deep and structured Château Cos d’Estournel 1986, awarded 95 points by Robert Parker Jr., marked by Cabernet Sauvignon, cassis, liquorice, graphite, cedar, smoky notes and a long Médoc finish.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, veal rack with morels, game birds, roast duck, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
