Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 — Saint-Estèphe

This Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 embodies one of the most powerful, classical and long-lived expressions of Saint-Estèphe. A Second Growth with an immediately recognisable style, Cos d’Estournel combines the depth of great gravel terroirs, the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and a highly distinctive spicy aromatic signature: cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine leather, cocoa, liquorice, oriental spices, forest floor, noble earth and a long mineral finish.

Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the great historic names of the Médoc, renowned for wines that are deep, structured, aromatically complex and capable of ageing for several decades. The 1986 vintage belongs to the great classical years of the Médoc, marked by a strong proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, significant tannic structure and remarkable ageing capacity. Today, this bottle can offer a mature, distinguished and highly noble expression, depending on its provenance and storage conditions.

The spirit of the wine

A great Saint-Estèphe of structure, depth and remarkable presence, where the power of the 1986 vintage is now expressed through noble tertiary complexity and freshness that remains impressive. The wine combines evolved black fruits, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather, cocoa, liquorice, forest floor and spices, with a dense, firm, distinguished and persistent palate. It is a Cos d’Estournel of ageing, classicism and great Médoc maturity.

Terroir: Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel and controlled power

The vineyard of Cos d’Estournel is located in Saint-Estèphe, in the northern Médoc, on deep gravel rises resting on clay subsoils. This combination gives wines that are powerful, structured and capable of preserving remarkable freshness. The gravel favours drainage and Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness, while the clay brings density, depth and texture.

The style of Cos d’Estournel combines the classical firmness of Saint-Estèphe with a more exotic and spicy aromatic dimension. Cabernet Sauvignon brings cassis, graphite, cedar, tension and structure; Merlot contributes roundness, flesh and fruit depth. In the 1986, the terroir is expressed through solid architecture, a persistent mineral frame and slow evolution towards notes of cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor and spice.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint-Estèphe, deep gravel, clay, cassis, blackberry, black plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather, oriental spices, forest floor and mineral freshness.

Cos d’Estournel signature: controlled power, fruit depth, noble structure, distinctive spice, firm tannins, tertiary complexity, freshness and long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep garnet evolving towards mahogany and brick-toned reflections depending on storage, still dense and luminous in fine bottles. The colour reflects the great structure of the 1986 vintage and the slow evolution of an age-worthy Bordeaux.

Nose: deep, classical and complex, with cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, melted black fruits, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine leather, cocoa and liquorice. With aeration, nuances of precious woods, oriental spices, sweet pepper, forest floor, noble earth, light truffle, fallen leaves, black mint and incense may appear.

Palate: broad, dense, firm and still structured, with evolved black fruit carried by persistent Médoc freshness. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, plum, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather, cocoa, liquorice and spices unfold with depth, supported by tannins that remain present but have softened with time. The finish is long, mineral, spicy and lightly saline, with an impression of controlled power, noble maturity and great Bordeaux classicism.

Expression of the 1986 vintage

The 1986 vintage in Bordeaux is particularly associated with the great Cabernet Sauvignon wines of the Médoc: structured, tannic, deep wines built for very long ageing. In Saint-Estèphe, this year produced wines of great architecture, sometimes austere in youth, but capable of developing complex nuances of cedar, tobacco, graphite, leather, truffle, forest floor and spice over time.

Today, this Château Cos d’Estournel 1986 should be approached as a great mature wine that remains structured and is highly dependent on its state of preservation. Measured aeration is recommended in order to preserve its balance and allow its tertiary notes to open gradually. A fine bottle can reveal a remarkable combination of Médoc power, freshness, oriental spice, cedar, graphite and mineral depth.

In summary: a deep, structured and nobly evolved Château Cos d’Estournel 1986, driven by the power of the vintage, the solidity of Saint-Estèphe and the spicy signature of this great Médoc estate.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, black plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, blond tobacco, fine leather, cocoa, liquorice, oriental spices, forest floor, light truffle, noble earth and a long mineral finish.
