Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1995 — Pauillac Second Growth
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1995 is one of the most charming Pauillac wines of the decade. Less vertical than the 1996, it offers a softer, more enveloping and immediately seductive expression, while retaining the depth of a great age-worthy wine.
Now mature, this Second Growth combines blackcurrant, black cherry, cedar, coffee, tobacco, fine leather, spice and undergrowth notes. The palate is full, silky and harmonious, with velvety tannins, preserved freshness and a long, noble and unmistakably Pauillac finish.
Terroir and Pichon Comtesse style
Located in Pauillac, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has a distinctive identity among the great growths of the Médoc: the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, often carried by a more velvety texture and a particularly graceful style.
In 1995, the ripeness of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot produced a broad, balanced and especially harmonious wine. The significant proportion of Merlot brings flesh and a more melted sensation, while Cabernet Sauvignon maintains poise, freshness and length.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet, evolving towards light brick reflections at the rim, still sustained depending on provenance.
Nose: open and complex, with blackcurrant, black cherry, plum, cedar, coffee, fine leather and spice. With air, notes of tobacco, undergrowth, wild mint and fresh earth appear.
Palate: broad and silky, with a fleshy attack, melted tannins and a very elegant texture. The ripe fruit remains present, supported by a fresh, spicy and persistent finish.
96/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
92/100 — Neal Martin, Vinous
17.5/20 — Jancis Robinson
Critics highlight the particularly seductive character of this vintage: ripe dark fruit, cherry, blackcurrant, coffee, cedar, leather, spice, supple texture and silky tannins. Neal Martin emphasizes its current maturity and the more pronounced Merlot expression, giving the wine a fleshy and harmonious openness.
The 1995 vintage and service
In Bordeaux, 1995 produced ripe, structured wines built for ageing. At Pichon Comtesse, the vintage stands out for its balance between Médoc depth, softness of texture and great accessibility at maturity.
A well-stored bottle can be served now with great pleasure. Favour careful opening, measured aeration and a serving temperature around 16 to 17°C, in order to preserve the aromatic finesse and harmony of the wine.
Key points: a mature, silky and charming Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1995, rated up to 96 points, combining Pauillac depth with the distinctive grace of Pichon Comtesse.
