Les Forts de Latour 2005 — Pauillac
This Les Forts de Latour 2005, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious second wines. From a great vintage in Pauillac, it offers a deep, structured and noble expression of the Latour universe: cassis, blackberry, cedar, liquorice, graphite, earth, spice, silky tannins and a long mineral finish.
Les Forts de Latour is not merely a secondary second wine. Its name comes from a historic parcel of the Enclos, and the château presents it as a wine capable of reaching the level of a Médoc Grand Cru Classé. In 2005, its Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend gives a dense, pure, fresh and remarkably balanced wine, further enhanced by the slow evolution of the magnum format.
A Pauillac of great class, more accessible than the Grand Vin yet clearly carrying the Latour signature: depth, precision, freshness, minerality and tannins of great finesse. The 2005 combines richness, balance and tension, with intense black fruit, serious structure and a long finish on cassis, liquorice, graphite and fine earth.
Terroir: the Enclos, its borders and the great soils of Pauillac
Les Forts de Latour comes from three main origins: the borders of the Enclos, certain parcels that may enter the Grand Vin depending on the blending tastings, and parcels located outside the Enclos but within the classified sectors of Pauillac. This origin explains the wine’s depth, preserving a close kinship with Château Latour while offering a slightly more open and immediate reading.
The gravel and clay soils of Pauillac give Cabernet Sauvignon structure, colour, depth and ageing capacity. In the 2005 vintage, this terroir expresses itself with great purity: cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, liquorice, fresh flowers, cedar, coffee, earth, graphite and clear minerality. The magnum format further reinforces the feeling of freshness and tension over time.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pauillac gravel, cassis, blackberry, cedar, graphite, liquorice, fine earth and persistent minerality.
2005 blend: 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, producing a concentrated, fresh, savoury and highly poised wine.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet and purple reflections, dense and still very sustained. In magnum, evolution should remain slow, with a colour that retains depth while beginning to show the first noble signs of maturity.
Nose: deep and racy, with cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, black cherry, cedar, coffee, liquorice, fresh flowers, forest floor, earth, spice and discreet oak. With aeration, the wine may reveal nuances of graphite, tobacco, cigar smoke, espresso, sandalwood and minerals.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, dense, pure and perfectly balanced. The tannins are refined, silky yet still structuring, supporting a broad, savoury and persistent core. Black fruit mingles with cassis, liquorice, mineral notes, cedar and earth, leading to a long, fresh, powerful and very Pauillac finish.
Fruit: cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, black cherry, ripe black fruits.
Evolution: cedar, coffee, tobacco, cigar smoke, forest floor, sandalwood.
Terroir: graphite, minerals, fine earth, liquorice, silky tannins, powerful and persistent finish.
Overall impression: a structured, pure, balanced and savoury great Pauillac, with a class close to a classified growth.
Expression of the 2005 vintage
The 2005 vintage in Bordeaux is renowned for its exceptional balance between ripeness, freshness, concentration and tannic structure. For Les Forts de Latour, it gives a wine of remarkable purity, with deep black fruit, marked minerality and tannins that are fine yet solid. Tastings often describe it as one of the best modern Forts de Latour, almost at the level of a classified growth.
Today, this 2005 in magnum is entering a very fine phase of maturity, while retaining significant ageing potential. It can be enjoyed now after careful opening, but the large format still allows it to gain further complexity: cedar, tobacco, fine leather, forest floor, graphite, light truffle and spice should gradually join the depth of the black fruit.
In summary: a deep, pure and structured Les Forts de Latour 2005, driven by a great Pauillac vintage and enhanced by the magnum format.
Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, black cherry, cedar, coffee, liquorice, fresh flowers, graphite, tobacco, fine earth and a long mineral finish.
