Château Latour 1988 — Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé
This Château Latour 1988 is one of the great classical Pauillac wines of the late 1980s. Less solar than 1989 or 1990, it stands out for its firm structure, slow maturity and deeply Latour-like expression: cassis, plum, cedar, forest floor, melted tar, tobacco, noble animal notes, minerality and tannins that remain remarkably present.
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Latour is renowned for producing some of the Médoc’s most durable and structured wines. The 1988 belongs to this family of straight, deep and patiently built Latours, long austere in youth, but capable with age of revealing great nobility, a velvety texture and a long, fresh and mineral finish.
A classical, elegant and underrated Latour, marked more by freshness, structure and depth than by opulence. The 1988 brings together ripe black fruits, plum, cassis, cedar, forest floor, melted tar, mint, eucalyptus, leather, meaty notes, liquorice, graphite and long tannic persistence.
Terroir: the Enclos of Latour, deep gravel and clay
Latour’s great terroir is based on the Enclos, the historic heart of the estate, composed of deep gravel associated with clay subsoils. These poor, well-draining gravels are particularly favourable to Cabernet Sauvignon: they force the vine to send its roots deep into the soil and encourage concentration, structure, colour and ageing capacity.
The presence of clay at depth brings water reserve and regularity, an essential element in slower-ripening vintages. In the 1988, this terroir is expressed through a firm, mineral frame, powerful yet ripe tannins, persistent freshness and a typical Pauillac aromatic profile: cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, earth, mint and forest floor.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, clay, cassis, cedar, graphite, tobacco, forest floor, mint and tannic structure.
Latour signature: contained power, noble austerity, firm tannins, mineral freshness and very long ageing potential.
Tasting notes
Appearance: dark garnet, sometimes still very deep depending on storage, with light amber or brick reflections at the rim. The best bottles retain remarkable density and a strong visual impression of poise.
Nose: deep, classical and evolved, with cassis, plum, black fruits, cedar, forest floor, melted tar, tobacco, leather, liquorice, mint, eucalyptus, dried herbs, earth and a touch of noble meat. Some bottles also show nuances of blackberry, graphite, black olive and sage.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, with a now softer entry followed by firm and persistent structure. The tannins are ripe, still present, sometimes slightly austere, but well integrated in the best bottles. Black fruit mingles with cedar, tobacco, earth and minerality, leading to a long, fresh, mentholated and slightly ferrous finish.
Fruit: cassis, plum, blackberry, black fruits, ripe red fruits, dark berries.
Evolution: cedar, tobacco, leather, forest floor, melted tar, meaty notes, black olive.
Terroir: graphite, minerality, earth, mint, eucalyptus, sage, firm tannins and persistent finish.
Overall impression: classical, mature, structured and elegant Latour, deeper than demonstrative.
Expression of the 1988 vintage
The 1988 vintage in Bordeaux was long considered stricter and less immediately seductive than 1989 or 1990. At Latour, it produced a wine of great structure, with significant concentration, marked minerality and an impressive tannic frame. Tasting notes regularly underline its classical character, elegance, black fruit, aromas of tar, cedar, forest floor, mint and eucalyptus, as well as the quality of its tannins.
Today, Château Latour 1988 is in a fine phase of maturity, while still retaining notable energy and structure. A well-preserved bottle will offer more depth, minerality and complexity than immediate roundness. It can be served now, with careful opening and measured aeration, in order to preserve its freshness and balance.
In summary: a classical, structured and underrated Château Latour 1988, marked by cassis, cedar, minerality and tannins of impressive persistence.
Dominant aromas: cassis, plum, blackberry, cedar, forest floor, melted tar, tobacco, leather, mint, eucalyptus, liquorice, graphite, earth and a ferrous finish.
