Château Latour 2011 — Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé

This Château Latour 2011 is a Pauillac of impressive poise, produced in a vintage that is less solar than 2009 or 2010, yet remarkable for its freshness, tension and precision. It offers a very classical reading of Latour: Cabernet Sauvignon dominance, black fruits, graphite, cedar, minerality, fine acidity, taut tannins and a long, straight, persistent finish.

Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Latour is renowned for wines of architecture, depth and very long ageing potential. The 2011 does not have the sheer volume of the immediately preceding vintages, but it possesses a racy, fresh and concentrated personality, with fruit purity and minerality that make it one of the most convincing wines of its year.

The spirit of the wine

A fine, vertical and taut Latour, driven more by energy, freshness and graphite than by opulence. The 2011 combines cassis, blackberry, blue fruits, plum, flowers, cedar, ink, forest floor, earth, spice, sweet tobacco and a strong sensation of crushed rock on the finish.

Terroir: the Enclos of Latour, clay-gravel soils and Pauillac freshness

Latour’s historic terroir lies within the Enclos, at the heart of Pauillac. The estate distinguishes two main soil types: clay-gravel soils in the centre of the Enclos and gravelly sands on its edges. The highly draining gravel layers sit above clay-marl subsoils capable of retaining water and supporting the vine during drier periods.

This combination gives Cabernet Sauvignon its depth, colour, tannic structure and ageing capacity. In the 2011, it expresses itself through a wine that is less massive than the great solar years, but extremely precise: black fruits, blue fruits, graphite, cedar, crushed rock, fresh acidity and firm tannins, all serving a long and mineral finish.

Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, clay-gravel soils, cassis, blackberry, blue fruits, graphite, cedar, crushed rock and great mineral freshness.

2011 blend: 84.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot, from a strict selection representing around 34% of the crop.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby with purple reflections, bright and still dense. The colour shows good concentration while retaining the brilliance and freshness typical of the more taut style of the vintage.

Nose: elegant, deep and still reserved, with cassis, blackberry, infused plum, blue fruits, flowers, cedar, graphite, ink, crushed rock, forest floor, earth, spices and a touch of sweet tobacco. With air, the bouquet gains complexity while preserving a true Latour restraint.

Palate: medium to full-bodied, dense, suave and juicy, with well-defined acidity and fine but firm tannins. The black and blue fruit remains pure, supported by a strong mineral imprint of graphite and rock. The finish is long, fresh, spicy and structured, with a tension that gives the wine its energy and ageing potential.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: cassis, blackberry, plum, blue fruits, black fruits, cassis coulis.

Evolution: cedar, forest floor, earth, sweet tobacco, ink, floral notes.

Terroir: graphite, crushed rock, minerality, fresh acidity, taut tannins and persistent finish.

Overall impression: elegant, strict, fresh and mineral Latour, more vertical than voluptuous.

Expression of the 2011 vintage

The 2011 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines that are fresher, more structured and less generous than 2009 or 2010. At Latour, spring conditions particularly favoured Cabernet Sauvignon, and the selection for the Grand Vin was rigorous. The result is a wine of precision, with less volume than the legendary years, but considerable tension, purity and minerality.

Today, Château Latour 2011 can begin to be approached, but it remains built for ageing. Lovers of straight, graphite-driven and understated Pauillac will find an authentic Latour here. With time, it should evolve towards more cedar, tobacco, graphite, fine leather, forest floor and spice, while preserving a fresh and mineral backbone.

In summary: a classical, fresh, mineral and taut Château Latour 2011, less powerful than 2009 or 2010 but remarkable for its purity, balance and precision.

Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, plum, blue fruits, flowers, cedar, graphite, ink, forest floor, crushed rock, sweet tobacco and spice.
