Château Latour 2008 — Pauillac Premier Grand Cru Classé
This Château Latour 2008 is one of the great Pauillac wines of the vintage, a wine of structure, depth and precision rather than immediate opulence. It expresses the classic Latour signature: Cabernet Sauvignon dominance, black fruits, cedar, graphite, damp earth, iron notes, dried herbs, tightly knit tannins and a long mineral finish.
Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Château Latour is renowned for wines of architecture, contained power and very long ageing potential. The 2008 belongs to this family of firm, straight and deeply constructed Latours, with marked freshness, a still-serious tannic frame and a purity of fruit that gives it remarkable capacity for evolution.
A dark, muscular and racy Latour, both powerful and highly controlled. The 2008 combines concentration, tension, grainy tannins and freshness. Its aromatic profile brings together cassis, blackberry, red plum, cedar, pencil lead, saddle leather, tobacco leaf, damp earth, iron ore and dried Provençal herbs.
Terroir: the Enclos of Latour, deep gravel and clay subsoil
Latour’s historic terroir is based on gravel ridges above the Gironde estuary. The estate describes its vines as mainly planted on gravel rises, between 12 and 16 metres above the estuary, with layers of gravel on the surface and clay subsoil beneath. This combination provides drainage, water reserve and regular ripening.
These poor gravel soils are particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which develops colour, structure, depth and ageing capacity here. In the 2008, this terroir is expressed with great clarity: pure black fruit, tension, iron-like minerality, pencil lead notes, tightly knit tannins and a long, savoury, earthy finish.
Terroir expression: Cabernet Sauvignon, deep gravel, clay, cassis, blackberry, graphite, iron, cedar, tobacco and tannic structure.
Latour signature: contained power, compact architecture, freshness, minerality and very long ageing potential.
Tasting notes
Appearance: very deep garnet with purple reflections, still dense and youthful in expression. The colour suggests a wine of great concentration, with slow evolution and strong visual presence.
Nose: initially reserved, then deep and highly classical, with cassis, blackberry, red plum, black fruits, cedar, pencil lead, saddle leather, tobacco leaf, spices, damp earth, iron ore and dried Provençal herbs. With air, nuances of flowers, sandalwood, black tea and fine smoke may appear.
Palate: structured, muscular and precise, with medium to full body, lively acidity and firm, tight, grainy tannins. The fruit remains pure and deep, supported by notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco and earth. The finish is long, savoury, fresh and mineral, marked more by tension and persistence than by immediate roundness.
Fruit: cassis, blackberry, black fruits, red plum, pure and restrained fruit.
Evolution: cedar, tobacco, saddle leather, black tea, sandalwood, fine smoke.
Terroir: graphite, pencil lead, damp earth, iron ore, dried herbs, persistent minerality.
Overall impression: deep, firm, fresh and long-lined Latour, built for extended evolution.
Expression of the 2008 vintage
The 2008 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines of freshness, structure and definition. At Latour, it stands out for great concentration without loss of fruit purity, clear acidity, firm tannins and marked minerality. Several critical notes highlight its power, structure, energy and still-youthful character, with very significant ageing potential.
Today, Château Latour 2008 remains a wine of patience. It can be appreciated by lovers of firm, deep and structured Pauillac, but its balance still points to a long future. With time, the black fruit should gain further nuances of cedar, tobacco, leather, truffle, forest floor, graphite and spice, while preserving the mineral backbone of the terroir.
In summary: a deep, structured and mineral Château Latour 2008, less opulent than solar vintages but remarkably straight, fresh and built for long ageing.
Dominant aromas: cassis, blackberry, red plum, cedar, pencil lead, saddle leather, tobacco, damp earth, iron ore, dried herbs, graphite and a long savoury finish.
