Château Latour 2008 — Pauillac First Growth, Single-Bottle OWC
This Château Latour 2008, presented in its single-bottle original wooden case, embodies one of the most classical and profound expressions of Pauillac. Classified as a First Growth in 1855, Latour is renowned for its powerful architecture, almost austere precision in youth and one of the most impressive ageing capacities in the Médoc.
The 2008 vintage gives here a Latour that is less solar than 2009 or 2010, yet remarkably dense, straight and mineral. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine expresses a dark and distinguished profile: cassis, blackberry, graphite, cedar, tobacco, mocha, truffle, spices and cold stone shape a deep, structured wine still destined for long evolution.
Terroir: L’Enclos de Latour and the power of Pauillac
The Grand Vin of Château Latour comes from the historic heart of the estate, L’Enclos, located on the deep gravel soils of Pauillac, close to the Gironde estuary. This terroir gives Cabernet Sauvignon a particularly noble expression: structure, density, freshness, tannic straightness and the dark mineral signature that defines the greatness of Latour.
The 2008 blend is based mainly on Cabernet Sauvignon, completed by a small proportion of Merlot and complementary varieties. Only a strict selection of the production was retained for the Grand Vin, reinforcing the concentration, precision and intensity of this cuvée in a demanding vintage.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep dark red with garnet reflections, still dense and sustained, showing a slow evolution that reflects both the concentration of the Grand Vin and the structure of the vintage.
Nose: noble, dark and unmistakably Pauillac, with cassis, blackberry, blueberry, graphite, cedar, blond tobacco, mocha, liquorice, truffle, damp earth and fine spices. With aeration, nuances of violet, noble leather, cigar, cold stone, undergrowth and dark chocolate may appear.
Palate: dense, straight and deeply structured, with firm yet noble tannins, precise acidity and great mineral persistence. The wine is more classical than demonstrative, carried by cassis, dark fruits, graphite, tobacco, spices and a long, fresh, firm and highly distinguished finish.
96/100 — Neal Martin, Vinous
Neal Martin awarded 96/100 to Château Latour 2008, describing a wine with a concentrated bouquet marked by blackberry, blueberry, iris, cigar and cold stone, followed by a beautifully defined palate, firm tannins, a marine influence, dark fruits and superb persistence. Robert Parker / Wine Advocate also awarded it 95/100, highlighting a classical, powerful, pure and profound Latour, with notes of cassis, graphite, truffle, mocha and embers.
Expression of the 2008 vintage and the value of the OWC
The 2008 vintage gives Latour an expression of great composure: more reserved, more mineral and more classical than the very ripe years, yet with remarkable depth and precision. The wine is gradually entering its maturity phase, while still retaining serious structure and significant ageing potential.
The presence of the single-bottle original wooden case enhances the appeal of this reference for collection, presentation and visual traceability. For service, progressive opening is recommended, without excessive decanting. A temperature of around 16 to 17°C will help preserve the finesse of Cabernet Sauvignon, the freshness of the vintage and the graphite, cedar and truffle nuances of the wine.
In summary: a Château Latour 2008 in single-bottle OWC, awarded 96 points by Neal Martin, from a classical and structured vintage, marked by cassis, blackberry, graphite, cedar, tobacco, truffle, noble tannins and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, beef fillet, roast lamb, rack of lamb with herbs, pigeon, duck, fine game, veal with morels, black truffle, noble mushrooms, fondant potatoes, aged Comté or gastronomic cuisine built around reduced jus and earthy notes.
