Château Pape Clément 2018 — Pessac-Léognan

This Château Pape Clément 2018 embodies a rich, deep and highly accomplished expression of Pessac-Léognan. A Grand Cru Classé de Graves, it combines the power of Cabernet Sauvignon, the flesh of Merlot and the smoky complexity typical of the great gravel terroirs, in a warm, dense and remarkably structured vintage.

The blend brings together 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, with around 18 months of ageing in barrels, including a significant proportion of new oak. The wine stands out for its concentration, intense dark fruit, velvety texture and long, spicy, mineral finish.

Terroir: Pessac-Léognan, deep gravel and smoky signature

Located just outside Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément is one of the historic estates of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Its gravel soils favour drainage, Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness and the mineral, smoky and subtly graphite expression that characterises the great red wines of Graves.

The 2018 vintage brings generous ripeness, highly expressive fruit and a powerful structure, while retaining fine freshness. The style is ample and refined, with dense substance, ripe tannins and strong ageing potential.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep red with dark ruby and purple reflections, dense, brilliant and still very youthful, showing fine ageing potential.

Nose: intense and expressive, with cassis, blackberry, black cherry, black raspberry, plum, violet, graphite, smoky earth, cocoa, liquorice and spices. With aeration, nuances of blond tobacco, noble wood, spring flowers, camphor, warm stone and gravelly minerality may appear.

Palate: ample, rich and highly structured, with deep substance, ripe tannins and fine energy. The dark fruit remains dense and precise, carried by well-integrated freshness, silky texture and a long, mineral, spicy and persistent finish.

Expert review

99/100 — Jeb Dunnuck

Jeb Dunnuck describes Château Pape Clément 2018 as a superb wine, even more convincing in bottle than during its en primeur tasting. His review highlights a deep colour and a spectacular bouquet of crème de cassis, blackberry, graphite, smoky earth, violet and spring flowers. The palate is full-bodied, rich and yet surprisingly elegant, with an almost ethereal texture, integrated acidity, harmonious tannins and a finish of great persistence. A very high-level Pape Clément, built to evolve for several decades.

Expression of the 2018 vintage

The 2018 vintage gives Pape Clément a generous, concentrated and highly complete expression. The wine remains youthful, but can already impress after gradual aeration. Over time, notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite, fine leather, cocoa, spices, subtle truffle and undergrowth should gradually join the power of the dark fruit and the smoky signature of the terroir.

In summary: a deep, rich and structured Château Pape Clément 2018, awarded 99 points by Jeb Dunnuck, marked by cassis, blackberry, graphite, smoky notes, violet, silky tannins and a long mineral finish.

Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
