Château Pape Clément 2007 — Pessac-Léognan
This Château Pape Clément 2007 offers a mature, smoky and elegant expression of Pessac-Léognan. A Grand Cru Classé de Graves, it combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon, the roundness of Merlot and the mineral, oak-aged and subtly smoky signature of great gravel terroirs.
The 2007 vintage, more classical and less powerful than the great solar years, now shows an evolved, harmonious and accessible profile. The blend brings together 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, producing a structured, supple and aromatically complex wine.
Terroir: Pessac-Léognan, gravel soils and smoky signature
Located just outside Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément is one of the historic estates of Pessac-Léognan. Its gravel soils favour drainage, Cabernet Sauvignon ripeness and the smoky, graphite and mineral expression that characterises the great red wines of Graves.
In 2007, the wine favours balance and finesse rather than power. The dark fruit has softened with time, the oak is now integrated, and tertiary notes of tobacco, fine leather, smoke, graphite and undergrowth now bring a more mature reading of the estate.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep garnet with dark ruby, mahogany and slight brick reflections depending on evolution, still showing fine intensity for a mature Bordeaux.
Nose: expressive and evolved, with cassis, plum, black cherry, graphite, noble charcoal, embers, blond tobacco, fine leather, sweet spices and smoky notes. With aeration, nuances of subtle truffle, undergrowth, mocha, dried herbs and noble earth may appear.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, supple and well structured, with tannins now softened, ripe fruit still present and fine freshness. The finish is long, spicy, smoky and slightly mineral, with an elegant expression now fully mature.
92/100 — Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Robert Parker describes Château Pape Clément 2007 as one of the successes of the vintage. His review highlights a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with notes of embers, charcoal, smoky barbecue, cassis, plum and graphite. The palate is opulent for the vintage, medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannins and a long finish. A mature Pape Clément, marked by the depth of Graves and fine smoky complexity.
Expression of the 2007 vintage
The 2007 vintage in Bordeaux produced more accessible wines, often less massive than the great ageing years, but capable today of offering fine aromatic maturity. This Pape Clément is ready to drink now, with gentle aeration rather than prolonged decanting, in order to preserve its balance, evolved fruit and tertiary notes.
In summary: a mature, smoky and elegant Château Pape Clément 2007, awarded 92 points by Wine Advocate, marked by cassis, plum, graphite, embers, tobacco, softened tannins and a long mineral finish.
Food pairings: matured rib of beef, roast lamb, duck breast, veal with morels, game birds, mushrooms, black truffle, Bordeaux-style slow-cooked dishes or mature hard cheeses.
