Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2017 — Domaine de Montille

The Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine de Montille is a distinguished red Burgundy from one of the most refined sectors of the Corton hill. Made from Pinot Noir, it combines the firm, noble structure of Corton with the elegance, freshness and aromatic clarity that define the 2017 vintage.

Domaine de Montille brings a precise and classical interpretation to this Grand Cru. The wine is not built on excess weight, but on balance, detail and length: dark berries, red fruit, spice, earthy depth and fine tannins come together in a poised, age-worthy style.

Clos du Roi, one of Corton’s most noble climats

Clos du Roi is often regarded as one of the most elegant and complete climats of Corton. Located on the south-eastern side of the hill, at mid-slope, it benefits from high-quality clay-limestone soils and an exposure that allows Pinot Noir to reach depth, structure and aromatic refinement.

The Domaine de Montille parcel lies just above the path separating Les Bressandes from Clos du Roi. This position gives the wine both Corton’s natural authority and a finer, more lifted expression, with mineral grip, freshness and a long, precise finish.

The 2017 Burgundy vintage

The 2017 vintage in Burgundy is marked by charm, aromatic purity and a more accessible structure than more austere years. The reds often show bright fruit, supple texture and fine balance, while the best Grand Cru wines retain the depth required for ageing.

In Corton Clos du Roi, this vintage brings a particularly attractive balance: the wine has the structure of the Grand Cru, but also a refined, open-knit quality that makes it more elegant than massive. It is now entering a rewarding drinking phase while keeping the capacity to evolve further in cellar.

Tasting notes

Colour: deep ruby with subtle garnet reflections, showing both concentration and early maturity.

Nose: complex and refined, with dark berries, crisp red fruit, wild strawberry, raspberry, plum, spicebox, forest floor, autumn leaves, fresh earth and discreet notes of orange peel.

Palate: poised, fresh and finely structured, with grainy tannins, vibrant red fruit, gentle grip and a beautifully proportioned finish. The wine shows Corton’s depth without heaviness, carried by freshness, precision and lingering savoury complexity.

Expert reviews

93/100 — Neal Martin, Vinous
90–92/100 — William Kelley, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Neal Martin describes the 2017 Corton Clos du Roi as complex and poised, with dark berry fruit, spicebox, neatly integrated oak, crisp red berries, orange peel and a finely proportioned finish. William Kelley highlights sweet red berries, plums, spicy forest floor, dark chocolate, tangy acidity, powdery tannins and a vibrant core of fruit.

Serving and ageing potential

This Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2017 can be enjoyed now after a gradual opening. Gentle aeration is recommended, allowing the wine to reveal its fruit, spice and earthy nuances without losing its finesse.

Serve at around 16°C in large Burgundy glasses. The wine is already entering a fine drinking window, but its Grand Cru structure and the balance of the vintage should allow further development over the coming years.

At a glance: a Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2017 from Domaine de Montille, rated 93/100 by Vinous, combining refined structure, bright red fruit, spice, earthy depth and excellent length.

Food pairings: roast duck, pigeon, rack of lamb, veal with mushrooms, beef fillet, game birds, truffle dishes, mature Comté or refined Burgundian cuisine.
