Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2011

This Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2011 embodies one of the most prestigious cuvées of Maison Taittinger. Made exclusively from Chardonnay grown on the great terroirs of the Côte des Blancs, it expresses a chalky, refined, ample and luminous style, driven by pure white fruit and mineral precision.

The 2011 vintage, early and atypical in Champagne, gives here an expressive and already approachable version of Comtes de Champagne. Less austere than some of the great long-ageing vintages, it seduces through its balance between ripeness, freshness, pastry notes, delicate yellow fruits, candied citrus and chalky tension.

Terroir: the chalky nobility of the Côte des Blancs

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is made from Chardonnay sourced from the five Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs: Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. These chalky terroirs give the wine its natural freshness, aromatic finesse, verticality and the saline imprint so highly prized in great Blanc de Blancs Champagnes.

Only the cuvée, the purest juice from the first pressing, is selected. Around 5% of the wines are aged for 4 months in new oak barrels, bringing a delicate toasted nuance, before the final blend undergoes around 10 years of ageing on lees in the chalk cellars of Saint-Nicaise.

Tasting notes

Appearance: pale yellow with golden reflections, luminous and brilliant, with a fine, creamy and persistent mousse, true to the elegance of great Blanc de Blancs Champagne.

Nose: expressive and refined, with gingerbread, liquorice, meringue, vineyard peach, pear, mandarin peel, candied lemon, pastry almond and a touch of lightly toasted brioche. With aeration, nuances of wet chalk, fresh hazelnut, white flowers and fine pastry may appear.

Palate: ample, fresh and precise, with fine bubbles, a creamy texture and beautiful mineral tension. The wine combines white fruits, citrus, pastry notes, sweet spices, anise, coriander and chalky salinity, leading to a long, elegant and delicately iodine-driven finish.

Expert review

97/100 — James Suckling

James Suckling awarded 97/100 to Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2011, praising a Champagne that is firm, fresh, structured, mineral, floral, energetic and persistent. Jeb Dunnuck, Jasper Morris and Wine Spectator also awarded it 93/100, while Wine Advocate gave it 92/100, confirming a real success in a demanding Champagne vintage.

Expression of the 2011 vintage

The 2011 vintage gives Comtes de Champagne a more open, generous and immediately seductive expression than the most sharply defined vintages of the house. Long lees ageing brings texture, complexity and roundness, while the chalk of the Côte des Blancs preserves lift, freshness and precision. This Champagne can be enjoyed today, ideally served around 10 to 11°C, while still retaining fine ageing potential.

In summary: a Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2011 awarded 97 points by James Suckling, sourced from the Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs and marked by vineyard peach, mandarin, meringue, pastry notes, chalk, fine bubbles and a fresh, saline finish.

Food pairings: oysters, langoustines, lobster, scallops, turbot, sole meunière, line-caught sea bass, white fish ceviche, seafood risotto, cream-based poultry dishes, aged Comté or mature Parmesan.
