Dom Pérignon P2 2002 — Plénitude 2
This Dom Pérignon P2 2002 is one of the most sought-after expressions of Maison Dom Pérignon. Born from a legendary Champagne vintage, it reveals a deeper, more energetic and more extensively aged interpretation of Dom Pérignon Vintage 2002, with aromatic precision, texture and intensity further enhanced by time.
The 2002 vintage produced Champagnes of great ripeness, concentration, freshness and ageing potential. In its P2 version, this Dom Pérignon gains density, relief and complexity: candied citrus, ripe pear, yellow fruits, white flowers, warm bread, praline, smoky notes, fine spices and salinity shape a Champagne that is broad, precise and deeply vibrant.
What does P2 mean? Dom Pérignon’s Second Plénitude
P2 stands for Plénitude 2, or Second Plénitude. At Dom Pérignon, a vintage can reveal several moments of expression throughout its life. The first release, often implicitly referred to as P1, corresponds to the classic Dom Pérignon Vintage, released after around eight years of ageing on lees.
Plénitude 2 corresponds to a much later stage: the same vintage is kept for many additional years in the house’s cellars, in contact with its lees, before being disgorged and released. This extra time does not simply create an older Champagne; it transforms the wine’s balance, increases its energy, deepens its texture and reveals a more intense, more profound and more precise expression.
For Dom Pérignon P2 2002, sources indicate around 15 years of ageing on lees, with a lower dosage than the first release of the vintage. The result is a Champagne that feels more taut, drier on the finish, more chiselled and more vibrant, while preserving the generous solar character of the great 2002 vintage.
Terroir: grands crus, premiers crus and Dom Pérignon balance
Dom Pérignon is always a vintage Champagne, produced only when the year allows the house’s identity to be fully expressed. The 2002 vintage is built on the balance between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with proportions close to 51% Chardonnay and 49% Pinot Noir according to available sources.
Chardonnay brings tension, light, citrus, white flowers and chalky precision, while Pinot Noir reinforces depth, structure, flesh and vinous presence. In the P2 version, this architecture gains intensity through extended ageing on lees, which brings greater texture, resonance and complexity.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous gold with bright golden reflections, deep and brilliant, with very fine, precise and persistent bubbles. The visual brightness reflects both the maturity of the vintage and the remarkable freshness preserved through extended lees ageing.
Nose: complex, noble and highly evolving, with ripe pear, yellow apple, candied lemon, orange zest, smoked peach, white flowers, warm bread, almond paste, praline, anise, liquorice, sweet spices and a fine peaty touch. With aeration, nuances of iodine, hazelnut, brioche, discreet honey, chalk and ripe yellow fruits may appear.
Palate: broad, dense and satin-textured, with ultra-fine bubbles, deep substance and very precise tension. The wine combines ripe fruits, candied citrus, toasted notes, spice, salinity and chalky energy, leading to a long, dry, elegantly smoky and remarkably persistent finish.
98/100 — James Suckling
James Suckling awarded 98/100 to Dom Pérignon P2 2002, praising its great complexity, subtlety, light bread-dough notes, lemon zest, spiced pear, anise and liquorice, as well as a full, dense and silky palate carried by ultra-fine bubbles and a savoury finish. Antonio Galloni / Vinous also awarded it 97+/100, highlighting a Champagne still taut, austere and built for the future, while Jancis Robinson MW distinguished it with a perfect score of 20/20.
Expression of the 2002 vintage and the value of P2
The 2002 vintage gives Dom Pérignon a solar, ripe and powerfully structured expression. In its P2 version, this richness is redirected towards greater precision, tension and depth. The wine feels both more intense and younger than its age might suggest, thanks to the long ageing on lees before disgorgement. This is the central appeal of Plénitude 2: to offer the vintage a second life, not more tired, but more energetic, more concentrated and more radiant.
Today, Dom Pérignon P2 2002 can already be enjoyed after careful opening, yet it still retains fine ageing potential. It will gain further complexity around notes of toast, hazelnut, fine honey, candied citrus, smoke, iodine, chalk and spice. Serving it around 10 to 11°C will preserve its tension, fine bubbles and aromatic depth.
In summary: a Dom Pérignon P2 2002, the Second Plénitude of the great 2002 vintage, awarded 98 points by James Suckling, marked by candied citrus, spiced pear, white flowers, praline, brioche, iodine, smoke, ultra-fine bubbles, great saline tension and remarkable ageing potential.
Food pairings: oysters, langoustines, lobster, scallops, turbot, sole meunière, line-caught sea bass, Bresse chicken with cream, sweetbreads, veal with morels, caviar, aged Parmesan, mature Comté, noble mushrooms, white truffle or gastronomic cuisine with iodine-driven and lightly toasted notes.
