Champagne Taittinger — The Elegance of Reims and the Grace of Chardonnay

Champagne Taittinger is one of the great historic houses of Reims. Established under the Taittinger name in 1932, it has become known for an immediately recognisable style based on elegance, freshness, fine mousse and a particularly important role given to Chardonnay.

Family-owned in both spirit and direction, Taittinger combines a vast vineyard heritage, high-quality sourcing and precise expertise in the crafting of its cuvées. Its name remains inseparable from Comtes de Champagne, one of the most admired Blancs de Blancs in Champagne, renowned for its purity, depth and remarkable ageing capacity.

The spirit of the maison

A Champagne of light, finesse and length. Taittinger seeks precise, airy and harmonious wines, where Chardonnay brings freshness, tension, aromatic brightness and natural elegance. The style favours purity and balance over power, with a refined, clear and enduring signature.

History: a great family house of Reims

The modern history of Taittinger began in 1932, when Pierre Taittinger acquired Maison Forest-Fourneaux and gave it his family name. Very early on, he asserted a distinctive vision: to build a great Champagne house in which Chardonnay would play a central role, bringing finesse, freshness and distinction to the blends.

After a brief financial interlude in the early 2000s, the Taittinger family bought back the house in 2006, confirming its commitment to a long-term, independent and heritage-driven vision. This family continuity remains a defining element of the maison’s identity.

Today, Vitalie Taittinger embodies this new generation, with particular attention to stylistic elegance, transmission and the precision of the cuvées. The house therefore retains a distinctive place in Champagne: great in history, yet still attached to a form of discreet refinement.

Terroir: Reims, the Côte des Blancs and great Champagne crus

The Taittinger vineyard extends over more than 280 hectares, spread across several major areas of Champagne. The house relies in particular on crus from the Côte des Blancs, the Montagne de Reims and the Vallée de la Marne, allowing it to craft precise, balanced and consistent blends.

The Côte des Blancs plays an essential role in the identity of the house, thanks to its great Chardonnay terroirs such as Cramant, Avize, Chouilly, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. These crus bring the cuvées their linearity, citrus brightness, chalky tension and ability to age gracefully.

In Reims, Taittinger also benefits from the famous Saint-Nicaise chalk cellars, where the wines slowly mature in a cool, dark and stable environment. These historic cellars contribute to the finesse of ageing and the regularity of the house style.

Expression of place: Reims, Côte des Blancs, Montagne de Reims, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, chalk, citrus, white flowers, fresh fruit, chalky tension and saline finish.

Taittinger signature: luminous, precise and elegant Champagnes, driven by Chardonnay, with fine mousse, great freshness and refined length.

Viticulture and vinification: precision, freshness and ageing in chalk cellars

The house works from an important estate-owned vineyard, complemented by carefully selected grape sources. This diversity makes it possible each year to seek a balance between freshness, ripeness, aromatic finesse and consistency of style.

Vinification is carried out with particular attention to fruit purity and the precision of the blends. Long maturation in the cellars, especially for the vintage cuvées and Comtes de Champagne, helps refine the texture, soften the mousse and develop deeper complexity without losing the drive of Chardonnay.

Wine style

The Taittinger style is built on the balance between elegance, freshness and delicacy. The strong presence of Chardonnay gives the wines an airy sensation, chalky tension and aromas of citrus, white flowers, white peach, fine brioche and, with age, sometimes fresh hazelnut.

The non-vintage cuvées offer an immediate, pure and accessible expression of the house style. The vintage wines and Comtes de Champagne gain depth, complexity and relief with time, developing notes of dried fruit, fine honey, chalk, light pastry and gentle spices.

Emblematic cuvées

Brut Réserve: the house’s emblematic cuvée, fresh, balanced and elegant, offering an immediate expression of the Taittinger style around finesse and brightness.

Prestige Rosé: an expressive and refined rosé Champagne, marked by red fruit, freshness and fine precision on the palate.

Prélude Grands Crus: a cuvée sourced from grand crus, combining structure, chalky tension, aromatic elegance and fine persistence.

Brut Millésimé: the expression of a specific year, deeper and more structured, balancing freshness, maturity and ageing potential.

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs: the iconic cuvée of the house, made exclusively from Chardonnay grown in grand cru villages of the Côte des Blancs. Pure, deep, chalky and long-aged, it ranks among the great Blancs de Blancs of Champagne.

Comtes de Champagne Rosé: a rare and gastronomic cuvée, combining vinosity, red fruit, structure, fine texture and great capacity for evolution.

Ageing and gastronomic pairings

Taittinger Champagnes are ideally served between 9 and 11 °C, depending on the cuvée. The non-vintage wines are enjoyed for their freshness and balance, while the vintage cuvées and Comtes de Champagne can evolve for 10 to 20 years, sometimes longer for great vintages stored in good conditions.

At the table, Taittinger Champagnes pair beautifully with fine oysters, shellfish, sashimi, noble fish, delicately prepared poultry, citrus-led cuisine, mature cheeses and gastronomic dishes. Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is particularly elegant with lobster, turbot, scallops, poultry in cream sauce or refined Japanese cuisine.
