Taittinger Collection 2008 by Sebastião Salgado — Brut Vintage with Presentation Case

This Taittinger Collection 2008 by Sebastião Salgado brings together two worlds: great vintage Champagne and contemporary art. Since 1983, Maison Taittinger has invited major artists to dress selected vintage cuvées, turning each bottle into a genuine collector’s piece. The 2008 edition, presented with its original presentation case, was created in collaboration with the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado.

For this edition, Salgado chose the image of a leopard drinking in the Barab River Valley, in Damaraland, Namibia. This black-and-white photograph, deeply rooted in his artistic vision of nature and the living world, gives the bottle a rare visual presence: sober, powerful and instantly recognisable. The 2008 vintage, one of the finest Champagne years of the 21st century, further enhances the appeal of this cuvée for both wine lovers and collectors.

Terroir: Brut Vintage 2008 and the spirit of the Taittinger Collection

The Taittinger Brut Vintage 2008 is crafted from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay brings finesse, brightness, citrus notes and chalky freshness, while Pinot Noir reinforces structure, depth and vinous presence.

The grapes come from some of Champagne’s finest terroirs, with Chardonnay notably sourced from the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and the edges of the Vallée de la Marne. Only first-press juice is used, in order to preserve the purity, precision and aromatic elegance sought by the house.

Tasting notes

Appearance: luminous golden yellow, bright and elegant, with fine, regular and well-integrated bubbles. The visual brilliance reflects both the freshness of the 2008 vintage and the patient evolution of a Champagne now entering maturity.

Nose: expressive and refined, with lemon, poached pear, greengage plum, peach, white flowers, honeysuckle, toasted brioche, lemon curd, honeyed notes, dried fruits and a fine smoky touch. With aeration, nuances of chalk, almond, light pastry and sweet spices may appear.

Palate: fresh, broad and precise, with fine mousse, bright lemony tension and a supple texture. The wine combines citrus, white fruits, brioche notes, yellow fruits, chalky minerality and lightly toasted accents, leading to a long, saline, elegant and delicately spicy finish.

Expert review

93/100 — James Suckling

James Suckling awarded 93/100 to the Taittinger Collection 2008 by Sebastião Salgado, highlighting a complex, rich, powerful and mineral Champagne, marked by toasted notes, lemony citrus, noble reduction and a saline finish. Wine Spectator also awarded it 93/100, praising its finely detailed mousse, vibrant acidity, poached pear, blackcurrant cream, toasted brioche, lemon curd and spicy finish.

Expression of the 2008 vintage and collector appeal

The 2008 vintage gives this Champagne a vivid, structured and particularly fresh expression. The natural acidity of the year brings tension, precision and ageing potential, while bottle evolution gradually develops more toasted, brioche and pastry-like notes. This edition signed by Sebastião Salgado, accompanied by its presentation case, has an appeal that goes beyond tasting alone: it is also intended for collectors drawn to artistic cuvées and great Champagne vintages.

In summary: a Taittinger Collection 2008 by Sebastião Salgado with presentation case, awarded 93 points by James Suckling and Wine Spectator, marked by citrus, pear, toasted brioche, lemon curd, chalky minerality, fine bubbles and a strong collector dimension.

Food pairings: oysters, langoustines, lobster, scallops, turbot, sole meunière, line-caught sea bass, Bresse chicken with cream, sweetbreads, aged Parmesan, Comté, noble mushrooms or gastronomic cuisine with iodine-driven and lightly toasted notes.
