Château d’Yquem — The absolute legend of Sauternes

Château d’Yquem is one of the most mythical estates in Bordeaux and the ultimate reference for the great sweet wines of Sauternes. The only estate classified as Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification, Yquem holds a unique place in wine history: that of a growth whose rarity, longevity and uncompromising selection have shaped a worldwide legend.

Located on the hill of Yquem, at the heart of the Sauternes appellation, the estate embodies an almost unique vision of wine: a masterful balance between richness, freshness, noble rot, aromatic precision and depth. Owned by LVMH since 1999, Château d’Yquem continues its history today under the presidency of Pierre Lurton, with Lorenzo Pasquini as managing director.

The spirit of the estate

Château d’Yquem does not simply seek concentration or richness. The estate aims for a higher form of balance, where time, botrytis, human selection and terroir freshness combine to create one of the deepest, most complex and most long-lived wines in the world.

History and identity of Château d’Yquem

The history of Château d’Yquem is inseparable from that of the great wines of Sauternes. For several centuries, the estate has stood as the absolute benchmark for sweet wines, thanks to an exceptional harvesting philosophy and a unique ability to produce bottles capable of ageing across generations.

The 1855 Classification confirmed this singularity by granting Yquem the rank of Premier Cru Supérieur, above all other crus of Sauternes and Barsac. This unique distinction confirms the château’s exceptional position within the Bordeaux hierarchy.

Yquem’s identity rests on a simple yet rare principle: producing the Grand Vin only when the vintage reaches the required level of excellence. This extreme selection policy explains both the rarity of the wine and its enduring prestige among collectors and lovers of great bottles.

A unique Premier Cru Supérieur in 1855

Château d’Yquem is the only estate to have received the title of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification. This exceptional rank distinguishes Yquem not only as the summit of Sauternes, but also as one of the great monuments of world wine.

This recognition is not based solely on the wine’s richness. It rests on its balance, precision, ageing capacity and consistency in great vintages. Yquem combines rare opulence with luminous freshness, allowing it to evolve for several decades without losing its brilliance.

Terroir: the hill of Yquem, between the Garonne and the Ciron

The vineyard in production covers approximately 100 to 103 hectares, planted mainly with Sémillon, complemented by Sauvignon Blanc. The soils combine gravel, sand, clay and limestone, forming a precious mosaic on a slightly elevated plateau, ideally exposed for slow and progressive grape ripening.

The microclimate plays a central role in Yquem’s identity. The proximity of the Ciron and the Garonne favours the morning mists necessary for the development of noble rot, or Botrytis cinerea. Afternoon sunshine then concentrates the berries, creating the rare alliance of sugar, acidity, aromatic complexity and freshness.

Terroir expression: Sauternes, the hill of Yquem, gravel, clay, limestone, Ciron mists, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, noble botrytis, concentration and freshness.

Yquem signature: richness, tension, perfect botrytisation, successive tries, long ageing, aromatic depth, masterful balance and exceptional longevity.

Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and vineyard precision

Sémillon forms the heart of the Yquem style. It brings flesh, texture, depth, richness and a remarkable ability to transform under the influence of noble rot. Sauvignon Blanc, used as a complement, brings tension, aromatic brightness, freshness and length.

The balance between these two grape varieties allows Yquem to avoid any heaviness despite the wine’s natural concentration. It is this tension between opulence and freshness, density and light, that distinguishes the estate’s greatest bottles.

Viticulture and harvesting by successive tries

At Yquem, harvest is one of the most demanding acts in the wine world. Picking is exclusively manual and takes place through successive tries, selecting only berries perfectly affected by noble rot. Each parcel may be revisited several times, sometimes over several weeks.

Yields are extremely low, as quality is placed entirely above volume. This severe selection explains both the rarity of the wine and its exceptional concentration. In certain years, when quality does not reach the required standard, the Grand Vin may not be produced.

Estate profile

Structure: rich, profound, unctuous, fresh and built for very long ageing.

Aromatic expression: roasted apricot, candied peach, mandarin, bitter orange, acacia honey, saffron, wax, sweet spices and dried fruit.

Texture: ample, silky and luminous, with remarkable acidity and an endless finish.

Personality: a monumental Sauternes, rich but never heavy, with exceptional complexity and longevity.

Vinification and ageing: time as an ally

Each trie is vinified separately in order to preserve the precision of origin and allow rigorous selection of the lots. Fermentations are slow, long and delicate, as the natural concentration of the grapes requires close monitoring and great technical mastery.

The wines are then aged in French oak barrels for an extended period, with demanding lot selection before final blending. Ageing supports the wine’s richness, refines its texture and allows it to gain depth without losing the freshness that defines the greatest Yquem vintages.

Harvest: manual, by successive tries, selecting only botrytised grapes at ideal maturity.

Fermentation: separate vinification of lots, slow fermentations in barrel.

Ageing: long ageing in barrel, with rigorous selection before blending.

Philosophy: retaining only the lots worthy of carrying the Yquem name, even if this means greatly reducing production.

Style of the wines

The style of Château d’Yquem rests on a rare duality: power and grace, richness and freshness, opulence and verticality. The wine has a dense, almost tactile substance, yet it is always balanced by remarkable acidity that lengthens the palate and prevents any heaviness.

In its youth, Yquem may express notes of apricot, mango, pineapple, candied mandarin, honey, flowers and spices. With time, the aromas evolve towards saffron, wax, tea, white truffle, dried fruit, blond caramel, dried flowers and saline notes.

The greatest vintages can evolve for 50 to 100 years, sometimes longer, while retaining astonishing freshness. This ageing capacity places Yquem among the most durable and fascinating wines in the world.

Emblematic cuvées

Château d’Yquem: the estate’s great sweet wine, produced only when the vintage reaches the required level of excellence. It is the noblest expression of Sauternes, combining concentration, freshness, complexity and longevity.

Y d’Yquem: the château’s dry white wine, produced since 1959. Made mainly from Sauvignon Blanc, complemented by Sémillon, it offers a more tense, floral and mineral style, with great aromatic precision.

Legendary vintages and longevity

Château d’Yquem is renowned for its ability to age across centuries. Certain historic vintages, such as 1811, 1847, 1893, 1921, 1945, 1967, 1975, 1988, 1990, 2001, 2007 and 2009, rank among the great benchmarks of sweet wine.

This rarity is reinforced by a very strict selection policy. Yquem may choose not to produce the Grand Vin when conditions do not allow the expected level of excellence to be reached. This uncompromising approach explains the estate’s enduring prestige and the fascination it holds for collectors.
