Château d’Yquem 1955 — Sauternes Premier Cru Supérieur

This Château d’Yquem 1955 is a heritage bottle from a great old Sauternes vintage, now fully mature. After nearly seven decades of evolution, it no longer speaks only through sweetness, but through deep and patinated complexity: dried apricot, orange marmalade, caramel, saffron, honey, beeswax, toasted almond, fig, malt, ripe exotic fruits and a long, fresh, saline and spicy finish.

The only Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification, Château d’Yquem holds a unique place in the history of great sweet wines. The 1955 belongs to those old Yquem vintages whose balance rests on botrytis concentration, the natural freshness of Sauternes and extraordinary ageing capacity. The best bottles can still show astonishing energy, with melted sweetness, carrying acidity and a finish of great nobility.

The spirit of the wine

An old Yquem, broad, luminous and still vibrant when well preserved. The 1955 combines the richness of honey, candied fruits and caramel with an acidic backbone that avoids any heaviness. It is a wine for meditation, more complex than simply sweet, where the depth of botrytis meets freshness, salinity and the patina of time.

Terroir: Sauternes, Ciron mists and noble rot

Château d’Yquem overlooks Sauternes from one of the highest points of the appellation. The vineyard benefits from the meeting of the cool waters of the Ciron and the warmer Garonne, which creates the morning mists needed for the development of Botrytis cinerea. Drier afternoons then allow the grapes to concentrate, producing the great sweet wines of Sauternes.

The soils combine gravel, clay and limestone. Gravel provides drainage, warmth and ripeness; clay brings depth and water reserve; limestone elements reinforce tension, precision and saline sensation. In an old bottle such as 1955, this terroir translates into melted texture, aromas of candied fruits, honey, wax, saffron, almond, caramel and a fresh finish that maintains balance.

Terroir expression: noble botrytis, Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, gravel, clay, limestone, dried apricot, honey, saffron, wax, candied orange, salinity and freshness.

Yquem signature: exceptional concentration, balance between sugar and acidity, botrytised complexity, silky texture and legendary ageing capacity.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep golden amber with copper reflections, sometimes light mahogany depending on storage. The finest bottles retain remarkable brilliance, with luminous depth that reflects both age, concentration and the wine’s slow evolution.

Nose: intense, mature and complex, with honey, dried apricot, candied orange peel, marmalade, caramel, saffron, beeswax, toasted almond, fig, malt, ripe exotic fruits, fine vanilla and a touch of crème brûlée. With aeration, nuances of black tea, noble mushroom, sweet spices, gingerbread and dried fruits may appear.

Palate: rich, silky and enveloping, yet carried by still-vivid acidity that maintains balance. Flavours of dried apricot, caramel, honey, saffron, candied orange, fig, almond and ripe exotic fruits unfold over a broad and melted texture. The finish is long, elegant, spicy and lightly saline, with freshness that prevents any sense of heaviness.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: dried apricot, fig, candied orange, marmalade, ripe exotic fruits, dried plum.

Botrytis and evolution: honey, saffron, beeswax, caramel, malt, crème brûlée, toasted almond.

Terroir: salinity, vivid acidity, sweet spices, black tea, noble mushroom, persistent freshness.

Overall impression: old, opulent, complex and still fresh Yquem, deeper and more meditative than simply sweet.

Expression of the 1955 vintage

The 1955 vintage at Yquem is sought after for its combination of richness, noble botrytis and preserved freshness. Tastings of old bottles evoke amber, opulent and deep profiles, with caramel, saffron, dried apricot, marmalade, malt, fig, ripe exotic fruits, crème brûlée and acidity firm enough to maintain balance despite age.

Today, Château d’Yquem 1955 should be regarded as a collector’s bottle to open with great attention to provenance, level, colour and cork condition. It should be served cool but not ice-cold, opened with care, tasted immediately and then followed slowly in the glass. A very fine bottle can still offer a rare, long, fresh and deeply moving experience.

In summary: a rare, mature and majestic Château d’Yquem 1955, driven by botrytis richness, Sauternes freshness and the aromatic depth of a very great old sweet wine.

Dominant aromas: dried apricot, orange marmalade, caramel, saffron, honey, beeswax, fig, malt, toasted almond, crème brûlée, ripe exotic fruits and a long saline finish.
