Château d’Yquem 1997 — Sauternes

This Château d’Yquem 1997 embodies one of the most prestigious, luminous and complex expressions of Sauternes. A Premier Cru Supérieur of mythical status, Yquem combines the richness of noble botrytis, the depth of Sémillon, the liveliness of Sauvignon Blanc and exceptional aromatic precision: candied apricot, roasted peach, mango, pineapple, bitter orange, candied zest, acacia honey, saffron, beeswax, vanilla, sweet spices, tea, marmalade and a long saline finish.

Château d’Yquem is the most emblematic name among Bordeaux’s great sweet wines, renowned for its unique balance between concentration, freshness, noble sweetness and exceptional ageing capacity. The 1997 vintage, generous, rich and expressive in Sauternes, now offers a mature, broad and intensely aromatic expression, where candied fruits, honey, spices and waxy notes mingle with freshness that remains essential.

The spirit of the wine

A great Sauternes of richness, brilliance and depth, where the sweetness of the 1997 vintage remains carried by Yquem’s freshness, precision and nobility. The wine combines candied yellow and exotic fruits, citrus, honey, saffron, wax, sweet spices and marmalade, with a broad, silky, dense and highly persistent palate. It is a legendary wine for contemplation and very long ageing.

Terroir: Sauternes, morning mists and noble botrytis

The vineyard of Château d’Yquem is located in Sauternes, on gravel, clay and limestone soils, in an environment favoured by morning mists and dry afternoons. This alternation allows the development of noble botrytis, essential to the concentration, complexity and balance of great sweet wines.

Yquem’s style is distinguished by its balance between opulence and tension. Sémillon brings depth, texture, honey, candied fruits and longevity; Sauvignon Blanc contributes freshness, aromatic brilliance and nervous energy. In the 1997, the richness of the vintage translates into generous sweetness, now harmonised by evolution, while acidity preserves length and purity.

Terroir expression: Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauternes, noble botrytis, gravel, clay, candied apricot, roasted peach, bitter orange, honey, saffron, beeswax and saline freshness.

Yquem signature: luminous richness, noble concentration, balance between sweetness and freshness, aromatic complexity, silky texture, precision and very long persistence.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep gold evolving towards pale amber, bright, dense and luminous. The colour reflects the concentration of the vintage, the richness of botrytis and a gradual evolution towards greater honeyed, spicy and candied complexity.

Nose: intense, complex and profoundly noble, with candied apricot, roasted peach, mango, pineapple, bitter orange, candied zest, marmalade, acacia honey, saffron and beeswax. With aeration, nuances of vanilla, sweet spices, gingerbread, black tea, blond caramel, dried fruits, orange blossom, blond tobacco and white truffle may appear.

Palate: broad, unctuous, silky and beautifully balanced, with generous sweetness carried by freshness that remains lively. Flavours of candied apricot, peach, bitter orange, mango, honey, saffron, marmalade, wax, vanilla and sweet spices unfold with intensity, supported by saline tension that avoids any heaviness. The finish is very long, fresh, honeyed, spicy and mineral, with an impression of nobility, purity and great persistence.

Expression of the 1997 vintage

The 1997 vintage in Sauternes produced generous, expressive wines rich in sweetness, often marked by great intensity of candied fruit, honey and spice. At Yquem, this richness finds balance through terroir precision, the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc and the estate’s rigorous selection.

Today, this Château d’Yquem 1997 is entering a particularly seductive phase of maturity, where the brilliance of candied fruit mingles with more evolved nuances of wax, saffron, tea, blond caramel, dried fruits and white truffle. It can already offer great complexity, while retaining remarkable capacity for further evolution for lovers of Sauternes fully polished by time.

In summary: a rich, luminous and profoundly complex Château d’Yquem 1997, driven by the generosity of the vintage, the nobility of botrytis and the unique balance of this Premier Cru Supérieur.

Dominant aromas: candied apricot, roasted peach, mango, pineapple, bitter orange, acacia honey, saffron, beeswax, vanilla, marmalade, black tea, dried fruits, white truffle and a long saline finish.
