Château Poujeaux 2010 — Moulis-en-Médoc

Château Poujeaux 2010 embodies the serious, generous and deeply Médoc character of the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation. Grown on the gravelly soils of Grand-Poujeaux, this Left Bank Bordeaux combines ripe black fruit, tannic structure, density and classical elegance.

In one of Bordeaux’s great vintages, Château Poujeaux produced a broad, concentrated wine built for ageing. Today, the 2010 is entering a more mature phase, where cassis, blackberry and dark plum are gradually joined by notes of cedar, tobacco, leather, graphite and sweet spice.

Style and maturity

Château Poujeaux is often appreciated for its balance between Médoc power, approachable fruit and ageing potential. The 2010 vintage shows a dense, ripe and structured expression, with generous fruit, a still-firm palate and a persistent finish.

Terroir and vinification

The vineyard of Château Poujeaux lies on the gravel rises of Grand-Poujeaux, in the heart of Moulis-en-Médoc. These well-draining soils encourage the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and give the wine its backbone, while Merlot brings volume, roundness and a more supple texture.

The 2010 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, completed by Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The result is a structured, deep and classic Bordeaux, with a still-present frame and the aromatic evolution expected from a Left Bank wine made for ageing.

Tasting notes

The colour remains deep, with garnet reflections that reveal the wine’s evolution. The nose opens with cassis, blackberry, dark plum and black cherry, followed by nuances of graphite, cedar, blond tobacco, cocoa, leather and spice.

On the palate, the wine shows dense fruit, firm tannins and enough freshness to support the structure. The style remains clearly Médoc, with a long, slightly liquorice, woody and tertiary finish. Careful decanting may help the wine open, especially if the bottle has been stored in good conditions.

Aromatic profile

Cassis, blackberry, dark plum, black cherry, cedar, graphite, tobacco, leather, cocoa, mocha, sweet spice, liquorice and forest floor.

Vintage expression

2010 is a highly structured Bordeaux vintage, marked by ripe fruit, strong concentration and firm tannins. At Château Poujeaux, it produced a powerful, mature and serious wine, long praised for its value among Left Bank crus.

The critics praise a dense, ripe and structured Château Poujeaux 2010, driven by black fruit, graphite, cedar, spice and firm tannins. The more recent Wine Advocate tasting calls for a measured approach: the best bottles should offer fine Médoc evolution, depth and tertiary complexity, while some may appear stricter or more austere depending on their storage history.

Food and wine pairing

This Moulis-en-Médoc is an excellent match for rib of beef, roast rack of lamb, duck breast, grilled entrecôte, game stew, slow-cooked dishes with mushrooms or mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, with opening in advance recommended.

Key points

At CHF 39, Château Poujeaux 2010 is a fine opportunity to discover a mature, serious and ready-to-drink Bordeaux from the excellent 2010 vintage. A classic Moulis-en-Médoc, still structured and ideal for lovers of evolved Left Bank wines.

Food pairings: beef, lamb, duck, game, slow-cooked dishes, mushrooms and mature cheeses.
