Château Poujeaux 2017 – Moulis-en-Médoc
Château Poujeaux 2017 reflects the classic elegance of the Médoc in a challenging vintage. Driven by its gravel-rich terroir, it delivers a refined, structured and harmonious profile, emphasizing freshness, precision and purity of fruit.
Overview
Located in the heart of Moulis-en-Médoc, Château Poujeaux benefits from one of the finest terroirs on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, composed primarily of Garonne gravel soils over clay-limestone subsoils. This combination ensures excellent drainage while maintaining sufficient water retention, allowing for even ripening and precise aromatic expression.
The blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and complemented by Merlot with a small proportion of Petit Verdot, brings structure, depth and freshness. Parcel-by-parcel vinification and aging in French oak barrels for around 12 months help refine the tannins and enhance aromatic complexity without overshadowing the identity of the terroir.
The 2017 vintage, shaped by contrasting climatic conditions, produced wines of classical style, favoring balance and finesse over opulence. At Poujeaux, careful vineyard selection resulted in a precise, structured wine that clearly expresses the estate’s Médoc character.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
The bouquet opens with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, complemented by hints of morello cherry. Subtle notes of cedar, licorice and mild spice intertwine with delicate toasted and lightly chocolatey nuances from oak aging.
Palate:
The attack is smooth and balanced, leading into a structured and elegant mid-palate. Fine, well-integrated tannins support a precise core of fruit, lifted by a refreshing acidity. The overall impression is one of clarity, finesse and classic Médoc balance.
Finish:
Long and fresh, the finish extends notes of dark fruit and spice with a subtle mineral edge. Persistent and refined, it highlights a harmonious wine true to its terroir, with solid aging potential.
