Pétrus 2008 — Pomerol, Single-Bottle OWC

This Pétrus 2008, presented in its single-bottle original wooden case, embodies one of the rarest and most sought-after expressions of Pomerol. A legendary wine of Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Pétrus is built on a singular identity: an almost absolute expression of Merlot, shaped by deep clay soils, extremely limited production and a reputation that has become mythical.

The 2008 vintage gives here a Pétrus that is less solar than 2009 or 2010, yet remarkably defined: fresher, more tension-driven, more mineral, with impressive depth and a very classical elegance. The wine combines black cherry, cassis, blackberry, mocha, truffle, undergrowth, noble earth, fine spices and a dense yet refined tannic frame. The presence of the single-bottle OWC naturally enhances its appeal for collection, cellaring and presentation.

Terroir: the deep clay of Pomerol

Pétrus holds a unique place in the Bordeaux landscape. Located on the plateau of Pomerol, the estate owes much of its identity to its deep clay soils, capable of retaining water and nourishing the vine with great regularity. This terroir gives Merlot a singular dimension: flesh, depth, texture, density and the contained power that distinguishes the greatest Pomerol wines.

The 2008 vintage is generally seen as a fresher and more classical year, in which the best terroirs produced precise, structured wines with fine energy. At Pétrus, low yields allowed significant concentration without losing freshness, resulting in a deep, dark, mineral wine built for long evolution.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep dark red, still dense, with garnet reflections and fine visual intensity. The colour reflects both the concentration of the vintage and the still very slow evolution of this great Pomerol.

Nose: deep and distinguished, with black cherry, cassis, blackberry, mocha, dark chocolate, truffle, damp earth, undergrowth, sweet spices, liquorice and a discreet floral touch. With aeration, nuances of fine tobacco, graphite, noble leather, brown caramel and dark minerality may appear.

Palate: dense, straight and remarkably composed, with deep substance, fine yet present tannins and acidity that brings tension. The wine is less opulent than some great solar vintages, yet deeply compelling for its precision, freshness, balance and long, mineral, lightly truffled and persistent finish.

Expert review

97/100 — Robert Parker / Wine Advocate

Robert Parker / Wine Advocate awarded 97/100 to Pétrus 2008, highlighting the wine’s intensity, pure Merlot profile, low yields, limited production and aromas of mocha, caramel, black cherry, cassis, earth and undergrowth. Neal Martin also awarded it 96/100, describing a classical, dark, mineral and precise Pomerol, with a tense palate, grainy tannins, fine acidity and a more austere finish than the 2009 or 2010 vintages.

Expression of the 2008 vintage and the value of the OWC

The 2008 vintage gives Pétrus a particularly elegant expression: less demonstrative than the very ripe great years, yet deep, distinguished and highly faithful to the identity of Pomerol. The wine is now entering a phase of gradual maturity, while still retaining fine freshness and structure. It can be enjoyed after careful opening, but continues to offer significant ageing potential.

The single-bottle original wooden case adds further value to this reference: it enhances presentation, visual traceability and the patrimonial appeal of the bottle. For service, progressive opening is recommended, without excessive decanting. A temperature of around 16 to 17°C will help preserve the finesse of the fruit, the texture of Merlot and the wine’s truffled nuances.

In summary: a Pétrus 2008 in single-bottle OWC, awarded 97 points by Wine Advocate, from a classical, precise and mineral vintage, marked by black cherry, cassis, mocha, truffle, undergrowth, noble earth, fine tannins and a long, fresh and structured finish.

Food pairings: beef fillet, matured rib of beef, veal with morels, roast lamb, pigeon, duck, fine game, sweetbreads, black truffle, noble mushrooms, fondant potatoes, aged Comté or gastronomic cuisine built around reduced jus and earthy notes.
