Échezeaux “du Dessus” Grand Cru 2020 — Domaine Cécile Tremblay
The Échezeaux “du Dessus” Grand Cru 2020 from Domaine Cécile Tremblay belongs to the most sought-after bottles in contemporary Burgundy. Produced in tiny quantities, this Côte de Nuits Grand Cru brings together the rarity of the domaine, the prestige of the climat and Cécile Tremblay’s unmistakable signature: vibrant fruit, silky texture, floral depth and natural energy.
In the 2020 vintage, Échezeaux “du Dessus” is sensual, precise and intensely perfumed. The wine opens with red cherry, fresh raspberry, wild strawberry, plum, wild berries, peony, exotic spice, orange zest and subtle smoky notes. The palate is beautifully balanced: ample, velvety and concentrated without heaviness, with a long, floral and mineral finish.
Échezeaux du Dessus, the heart of the Grand Cru
The lieu-dit Échezeaux du Dessus is one of the most highly regarded sectors of the Échezeaux Grand Cru. Located in the upper, more qualitative part of the appellation, it produces wines of depth, perfume and especially refined texture. In the finest hands, this terroir combines the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée with the noble structure of great Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir.
At Domaine Cécile Tremblay, this Grand Cru takes on a rare and highly personal dimension. The domaine works with an approach based on infusion, gentle extraction and respect for fruit, producing wines that avoid excess and instead reveal deep, almost tactile intensity. The Échezeaux “du Dessus” 2020 perfectly captures this spirit: a wine of perfume, texture and precision, already fascinating for its brilliance, yet built to evolve with grace.
Tasting notes
Appearance: luminous purple-ruby, with beautiful intensity and the visual purity of a great young Pinot Noir.
Nose: elegant, floral and deep, with fresh raspberry, red cherry, wild strawberry, plum, wild berries, peony, sweet spice and a touch of orange peel. With air, fine smoke, spiced meat, noble earth and warm stone bring further complexity.
Palate: ample, silky and beautifully balanced, with concentrated fruit that never feels heavy. The tannins are fine, the texture is velvety, and the finish stretches out on red fruit, flowers, spice and a highly refined mineral impression.
94–96/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, William Kelley
93–95/100 — Burghound
17.5+/20 — Jancis Robinson
The critics place this Échezeaux “du Dessus” 2020 among the domaine’s great successes. Wine Advocate describes a Grand Cru broader and more flamboyant than the Chapelle-Chambertin, driven by plum, wild berries, exotic spice, orange peel, peony and a long, expansive finish. Burghound and Jancis Robinson also confirm the very high level of this cuvée. Jasper Morris highlights the elegance of the bouquet, fresh raspberry, red cherry, remarkable texture and very fine length. A rare bottle, already highly sought after by lovers of Cécile Tremblay and collectible Grand Cru Burgundy.
The 2020 vintage and serving advice
The 2020 vintage in Burgundy produced red wines of impressive ripeness, natural concentration, deep colour and preserved freshness. At Cécile Tremblay, this context gives Échezeaux “du Dessus” a wine rich in perfume, dense without excess and lifted by the energy that balances the generosity of the year.
This bottle has excellent ageing potential and ideally deserves several more years in the cellar. For drinking today, open it in advance and allow the wine to breathe gradually in the glass rather than decanting too aggressively. Serve at around 15 to 16°C in large Burgundy glasses to preserve the precision of the fruit, floral expression and fine texture.
Key point: a rare Échezeaux “du Dessus” Grand Cru 2020 from Cécile Tremblay, rated up to 96/100, produced in tiny quantities, floral, sensual and built for great Burgundy cellars.
Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with cherries, veal fillet, gently roasted beef, truffled poultry, mushroom risotto, quail, dishes with morels, pink-roasted lamb, aged Comté or mature Burgundy cheeses.
