Grands-Échezeaux Grand Cru 2021 — Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
The Grands-Échezeaux Grand Cru 2021 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is one of the most prestigious bottles of the Côte de Nuits. Deeper, more structured and more aristocratic than neighbouring Échezeaux, this Grand Cru offers a noble expression of Burgundy Pinot Noir: broad, refined, textural and built for long ageing.
In the 2021 vintage, this Grands-Échezeaux favours precision, freshness and structural nobility. The wine unfolds with wild berries, plum, black cherry, rose, incense, sweet spice, fine earth and floral notes. The palate is broad, layered and deeply textured, with powdery tannins, impressive length and a savoury finish that confirms the great potential of this bottle.
Grands-Échezeaux, the deep nobility of Flagey-Échezeaux
Situated between Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, Grands-Échezeaux is one of the most sought-after Grand Crus of Flagey-Échezeaux. More compact and more homogeneous than Échezeaux, it produces wines of natural depth, noble structure and remarkable ageing capacity.
At Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Grands-Échezeaux holds a distinctive place: less immediately famous than Romanée-Conti or La Tâche, yet highly prized by collectors for its poise, density and balance between contained power and refinement. The 2021 vintage reinforces this classical dimension, with a cooler, more chiselled profile and a very pure reading of terroir.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet and violet reflections, bright, dense and still very youthful in appearance.
Nose: noble and deep, with wild berries, plum, black cherry, raspberry, rose, incense and sweet spice. With air, notes of fine earth, dried petals, delicate pepper, early forest floor and damp stone bring further complexity.
Palate: broad, textured and perfectly controlled, with deep fruit, fine powdery tannins and freshness that lengthens the wine without hardness. The finish is long, savoury, floral and spicy, with a clear impression of mastered power and great nobility.
95/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, William Kelley
94/100 — Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
Wine Advocate describes the 2021 Grands-Échezeaux as denser and deeper than the Échezeaux, driven by wild berries, plum, sweet spices, incense and rose petals. The palate is broad and textured, almost unctuous on the attack, with a layered mid-palate, powdery tannins and a long, savoury finish. Jasper Morris MW also confirms the high level of this bottle. A rare Grand Cru from one of Burgundy’s most mythical domaines, destined for great cellars and DRC collectors.
The 2021 vintage and serving advice
The 2021 vintage in Burgundy produced red wines of classical freshness, precision and aromatic clarity, far from the more solar profiles of certain recent years. For a wine such as Grands-Échezeaux, this freshness highlights perfume, fine structure, tension and long-term ageing potential.
This bottle is above all intended for the cellar. It will benefit from several years of ageing to reveal its full floral, spicy and tertiary complexity. For drinking today, open in advance and allow the wine to breathe gradually in the glass rather than decanting too firmly. Serve at around 15 to 16°C in large Burgundy glasses.
Key point: a Grands-Échezeaux Grand Cru 2021 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, rated up to 95/100, rare, deep, noble and built for long ageing.
Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with cherries, veal fillet, gently roasted beef, truffled poultry, morel risotto, pink-roasted lamb, dishes with noble mushrooms, aged Comté or mature Burgundy cheeses.
