Échezeaux Grand Cru 2022 — Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils

The Échezeaux Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils is a rare Côte de Nuits bottle from one of Burgundy’s most emblematic Grand Cru climats. This Grand Cru Pinot Noir brings together the prestige of Échezeaux, the precision of a family-run domaine and the generous charm of the 2022 vintage.

The wine is immediately appealing for its balance between depth and refinement: black cherry, ripe raspberry, intense red fruit, violet, fine spice, a touch of liquorice, stony notes and a silky texture. The palate is ample, harmonious and already expressive, while retaining the structure and length expected from a great Pinot Noir built for ageing.

Échezeaux, a major Grand Cru of Flagey-Échezeaux

Located between Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot and Chambolle-Musigny, Échezeaux is one of the most celebrated Grand Cru appellations of the Côte de Nuits. Its identity rests on a rare combination of perfume, depth, velvety texture and the ability to produce wines that are both seductive and built to age.

Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils describes its Échezeaux as coming from a single parcel in Flagey-Échezeaux, planted on marl, red silt and stony soils over a Bajocian limestone base. Production remains highly limited, with an average of around 1,000 bottles, reinforcing the confidential character of this cuvée.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby with violet reflections, bright and dense, showing the brilliance of a young Grand Cru.

Nose: expressive and refined, with black cherry, ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, violet, sweet spice and a touch of liquorice. With air, notes of warm stone, fine earth, delicate pepper and dark fruit bring additional depth.

Palate: voluptuous, harmonious and beautifully shaped, with pure fruit, fine tannins and a silky texture. The finish is long, spicy and mineral, carried by ripe fruit and the elegance typical of the great terroirs of the Côte de Nuits.

Expert view

92–95/100 — Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Jasper Morris MW places this Échezeaux 2022 at a very high level, with a score reaching 95/100 and a drinking window that confirms the seriousness of the cuvée. The wine is described as remarkably balanced, with a refined and convincing finish. A very fine opportunity for lovers of Grand Cru Burgundy seeking a confidential, elegant and cellar-worthy bottle.

The 2022 vintage and serving advice

The 2022 vintage in Burgundy produced generous, ripe and balanced red wines, with beautiful fruit intensity and a structure often more accessible than in very strict years. In a Grand Cru such as Échezeaux, this ripeness brings volume, charm and strong aromatic appeal.

This bottle can be cellared for several years to gain further complexity, but it will also appeal to lovers of young Grand Cru Burgundy after gradual aeration. Serve at around 15 to 16°C in large Burgundy glasses to preserve the finesse of the fruit, the spice and the silky texture.

Key point: an Échezeaux Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Gérard Julien & Fils, produced in very limited quantities, rated up to 95/100, with a harmonious, silky, spicy and deeply Burgundian profile.

Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with cherries, veal fillet, gently roasted beef, truffled poultry, pink-roasted lamb, mushroom risotto, dishes with morels, aged Comté or mature Burgundy cheeses.
