The Wines of Graubünden – Alpine Finesse and Terroir Diversity

Located in eastern Switzerland, the canton of Graubünden is one of the country’s most prestigious winegrowing regions. Its wines are recognised for their purity, marked minerality and refined aromatic expression—qualities shaped by unique alpine soils and a cool climate perfectly suited to precision viticulture.

The vineyard is divided into two main sub-regions: Bündner Herrschaft, the historic and qualitative heart of the canton, and Churer Rheintal, a more discreet area with remarkable potential.

1) Bündner Herrschaft – The Cradle of Swiss Pinot Noir

Situated in the northern part of the canton, the Bündner Herrschaft is its largest and best-known wine region, covering around 345 hectares. It encompasses four emblematic communes: Fläsch, Maienfeld, Malans and Jenins.

An Exceptional Terroir

  • Optimal sun exposure thanks to south-facing slopes,
  • Highly varied soils: schist, limestone gravel, glacial moraine,
  • Microclimates influenced by the Föhn, promoting full ripeness.

Wines of Great Elegance

The flagship grape is Pinot Noir, considered one of Switzerland’s finest expressions:

  • precision and finesse,
  • red and black fruit aromas,
  • velvety texture,
  • excellent ageing potential.

The region also produces remarkable white wines, notably:

  • Chardonnay,
  • Gewürztraminer,
  • Sauvignon Blanc,

often characterised by freshness, balanced maturity and pure aromatic expression.

2) Churer Rheintal – A Discreet Region with Great Potential

Further south, the Churer Rheintal stretches along the Rhine and includes the communes of Igis, Zizers, Trimmis and Chur. Smaller than the Bündner Herrschaft, it nevertheless shows constant qualitative progression and a terroir full of promise.

A Climate Favouring Slow Ripening

  • Influence of alpine winds and the Rhine corridor,
  • Ideal conditions for fresh, tense and beautifully balanced wines.

Wines of Great Precision

Pinot Noir also dominates here, generally offering cooler, straighter profiles than those of the canton’s north.

The white wines display excellent expression of:

  • Chardonnay,
  • Pinot Gris,

with delicate aromas, fine texture and pronounced minerality.

A Unique Alpine Identity

Whether red or white, wines from Graubünden are recognisable for their:

  • pure minerality,
  • refined aromatic finesse,
  • structuring alpine freshness,
  • elegant textures,
  • notable ageing potential.

The diversity of soils and exposures, combined with precise know-how blending tradition and modernity, allows producers to craft wines that authentically express the alpine identity of this exceptional region.
