Saint-Estèphe, great Médoc wines between power, freshness and depth

Located in the northern Médoc, along the Gironde estuary, the Saint-Estèphe appellation holds a distinctive place among the great wines of Bordeaux. Further north than Pauillac, it produces deep, structured and naturally fresh red wines.

The appellation is notably led by two major Second Growths: Château Montrose and Château Cos d’Estournel. These estates embody two faces of Saint-Estèphe: the classical, deep and mineral rigour of Montrose, and the velvety, spicy and singular power of Cos d’Estournel.

The spirit of Saint-Estèphe

Saint-Estèphe expresses a deep, firm and patient side of the Médoc. Its wines combine tannic density, natural freshness, earthy character and remarkable ability to evolve in great vintages.

A northern terroir with a strong character

The terroir of Saint-Estèphe is based on a mosaic of gravel, limestone, clay and sand. Gravel ensures drainage and ripeness, while clay brings freshness, density and tannic power.

This diversity explains the often deeper and more structured style of the appellation’s wines. Saint-Estèphe wines can appear firm in their youth, but they gain harmony, complexity and nobility with time.

The great châteaux of Saint-Estèphe

Château Montrose: a Second Growth and emblematic Saint-Estèphe estate, renowned for straight, deep, structured wines capable of evolving over very long periods.

Château Cos d’Estournel: a Second Growth with a powerful, velvety and spicy style, famous for its distinctive personality, aromatic depth and silky texture.

Château Calon-Ségur: a Third Growth known for classic, deep wines often marked by freshness and strong Médoc character.

Château Lafon-Rochet: a Fourth Growth producing structured, direct wines that clearly reflect the earthy character of Saint-Estèphe.

Château Cos Labory: a Fifth Growth and historic estate of the appellation, offering a classic and accessible expression of the sector.

Choose according to your needs

For gifting: Montrose and Cos d’Estournel are two strong, immediately recognisable names for lovers of great Bordeaux wines.

For the table: Saint-Estèphe wines pair beautifully with red meats, roast lamb, game, slow-cooked dishes and wine-based sauces.

For collecting: great Saint-Estèphe vintages appeal for their depth, freshness and slow evolution.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and the Médoc blend

Saint-Estèphe wines are mainly based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, freshness, blackcurrant, cedar and ageing potential, while Merlot plays an important role on clay soils, adding flesh, roundness and fruit.

Cabernet Sauvignon: structure, depth, freshness, blackcurrant, cedar and longevity.

Merlot: roundness, flesh, ripe fruit and density on clay soils.

Cabernet Franc: aromatic finesse, elegance and balance within the blend.

Petit Verdot: colour, tension and spicy notes in support of the blend.

The style of Saint-Estèphe wines

Saint-Estèphe red wines stand out for a clearly Médoc expression: dense tannic structure, ample mouthfeel, natural freshness and aromatic depth around blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite and spices.

With age, they gain harmony and develop notes of fine leather, tobacco, undergrowth, truffle, discreet smoke and sometimes a saline nuance. This slow evolution is part of their deep identity.

Classified growths and emblematic estates

Saint-Estèphe counts five classified growths in the 1855 Classification. The appellation has no First Growth, but it is home to two major Second Growths: Montrose and Cos d’Estournel.
