2000 Vintage — A Symbolic, Prestigious Year for Anniversary Wines

Buying a 2000 wine means choosing a vintage with strong symbolic value, highly sought after for a birth year, an anniversary, a collector’s cellar or a prestigious gift. Now more than twenty years old, the finest bottles are beginning to reveal attractive maturity, with softer tannins, evolved aromas and increasingly seductive complexity.

The clear highlight of the vintage is Bordeaux, where 2000 remains a major reference. The Rhône Valley and Piedmont also offer very fine bottles from leading producers. Champagne, Burgundy and Napa Valley can be interesting, but require greater selectivity according to estate, cuvée and provenance.

Our advice

For an anniversary gift or a birth-year bottle, first consider a great 2000 Bordeaux, a great wine from the Rhône Valley, a benchmark Barolo or Barbaresco, or a 2000 vintage Champagne from a leading house. In Burgundy and Napa Valley, selection should be stricter: producer, storage condition and provenance are decisive.

Buying guide

The strongest choices: great Bordeaux, top Rhône wines, Barolo and Barbaresco from recognised producers.

Best for an anniversary gift: Bordeaux 2000, vintage Champagne, Barolo, Barbaresco, well-preserved magnums.

Best for lovers of maturity: Bordeaux, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, evolved Nebbiolo.

Check before buying: fill level, colour, capsule, cork, provenance, storage history and bottle format.

What is the style of 2000 wines?

2000 is a vintage of maturity, prestige and attractive aromatic richness. The best bottles now combine evolved fruit, softened structure, tertiary notes and strong emotional value. The vintage is not equally strong in every region: the great successes of Bordeaux should be clearly distinguished from the more selective expressions found elsewhere. It is a year to choose carefully, but it can offer very fine tasting experiences.

Bordeaux 2000: the great highlight of the vintage

In Bordeaux, 2000 is one of the major modern references. The finest classified growths stand out for their depth, structure, concentration and ability to evolve over several decades. The tannins are now beginning to soften, while aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco, fine leather and forest floor gain in complexity.

The Left Bank, especially Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux and Saint-Estèphe, produced powerful, distinguished and long-lived wines. The Right Bank, with Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, offers wines that are often fleshier, more sensual and more expressive.

To favour: Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, Saint-Estèphe, Pessac-Léognan, Pomerol, Saint-Émilion.

Best for: anniversary gifts, collector’s cellars and lovers of age-worthy great Bordeaux.

Buying priority: very high for well-preserved great châteaux.

Rhône Valley 2000: maturity, spice and fine successes

In the Rhône Valley, 2000 offers fine successes, especially in the great terroirs of the southern Rhône and from the best producers of the northern Rhône. The wines can now show notes of black fruit, garrigue, pepper, leather, liquorice, tobacco and spice, with maturity already well established.

Benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape, selected Hermitage and the finest Côte-Rôtie are among the most interesting choices. Estate selection and bottle condition remain essential to enjoy the vintage fully.

To favour: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, great southern Rhône estates.

Best for: lovers of mature, spicy, generous and gastronomic wines.

Buying priority: high for well-preserved top cuvées.

Piedmont 2000: ripe, generous and seductive Nebbiolo

In Piedmont, 2000 is a ripe and generous vintage for Nebbiolo. The finest Barolo and Barbaresco can offer a rich, accessible and expressive style, with notes of ripe red fruit, dried rose, leather, tobacco, liquorice, spice and sometimes truffle with evolution.

It is not always the strictest or most classical Piedmont vintage, but it can be highly seductive from benchmark producers, especially for lovers of more open and already evolved Nebbiolo.

To favour: Barolo, Barbaresco, historic producers, bottles with clear provenance.

Best for: lovers of mature, generous and aromatic Nebbiolo.

Buying priority: high from benchmark producers, but selective according to storage condition.

Champagne 2000: charm, maturity and immediate pleasure

In Champagne, 2000 should be approached with nuance. It is not a mythical vintage like 1996, 2002 or 2008, but the best houses produced ripe, harmonious and enjoyable Champagnes, often marked by an accessible and generous expression.

The best 2000 Champagnes can offer notes of ripe fruit, brioche, hazelnut, light honey, dried flowers and sweet spice. They are more interesting for the pleasure of a mature bottle than for very long additional ageing.

To favour: leading houses, prestige cuvées, well-preserved magnums.

Best for: anniversaries, prestigious aperitifs and lovers of mature Champagne.

Buying priority: high for leading houses, but selective according to bottle condition.

Burgundy 2000: charm, finesse and producer selection

In Burgundy, 2000 is more a vintage of charm than great concentration. The best reds can now offer a fine expression of mature Pinot Noir, with evolved fruit, floral notes, forest floor, spice and delicate texture.

White Burgundies from 2000 should be approached with caution. Some perfectly stored bottles can be highly appealing, but provenance and storage condition are decisive. The vintage should be bought estate by estate, and often cuvée by cuvée.

To favour: leading Côte de Nuits estates, the best terroirs of the Côte de Beaune, whites with impeccable provenance.

Best for: lovers of mature, fine and delicate Burgundy.

Buying priority: selective, dependent on producer and provenance.

Napa Valley 2000: to select according to estate

In Napa Valley, 2000 is a vintage to approach with discernment. Some leading estates produced rich, ripe and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon, but quality may vary according to producer, terroir and storage conditions.

The best wines can now offer notes of black fruit, cedar, chocolate, tobacco and spice. For any purchase, favour recognised producers, top cuvées and bottles with perfectly clear provenance.

To favour: Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, benchmark estates, cuvées with clear storage history.

Best for: lovers of mature American Cabernet Sauvignon and selective collectors.

Buying priority: selective, dependent on estate and provenance.

Buying and serving a 2000 bottle

Buying a 2000 wine is an excellent idea for celebrating a birth year, an anniversary or a major occasion. The vintage carries strong symbolic value, but it requires particular attention to bottle condition.

Before buying, check the fill level, colour, capsule, cork condition, provenance and storage history. Before serving, stand mature red wines upright for several hours, open carefully and taste before considering decanting. For mature Champagnes, serve cool but not ice-cold in order to preserve evolved aromas.

2000: a symbolic, mature vintage to choose with discernment

The 2000 vintage remains one of the great choices for an anniversary bottle or birth-year wine. Bordeaux is its undisputed peak, complemented by fine successes in the Rhône Valley, Piedmont, selected leading Champagne houses, and carefully chosen bottles from Burgundy and Napa Valley.
