Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Aux Malconsorts” 2012 — Domaine Louis Jadot

The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Aux Malconsorts” 2012 from Domaine Louis Jadot is a serious, structured and deeply expressive Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir. Situated just beside some of Burgundy’s most prestigious Grand Cru vineyards, Aux Malconsorts is widely regarded as one of the finest Premier Cru climats of Vosne-Romanée.

In the 2012 vintage, this wine shows the darker, more muscular side of Vosne-Romanée: black cherry, raspberry, blackberry, wild berries, violet, spice, smoke, tobacco, undergrowth and mineral notes. The palate is concentrated and precise, with firm but finely shaped tannins, impressive length and the kind of quiet authority that makes Malconsorts so sought after.

Aux Malconsorts, one of Vosne-Romanée’s great Premier Cru climats

Located in the southern part of Vosne-Romanée, Aux Malconsorts lies close to the border with Nuits-Saint-Georges and next to the legendary La Tâche sector. Its clay-limestone soils produce wines with notable depth, aromatic complexity and a naturally firm structure.

Domaine Louis Jadot’s interpretation favours balance, vineyard definition and ageing capacity. The wine is not built on immediate charm alone; it carries the density, spice and mineral drive of the climat, while preserving the elegance and aromatic refinement expected from Vosne-Romanée.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby red with darker garnet reflections, still showing good density and brightness.

Nose: complex and still slightly reserved, opening on black cherry, raspberry, blackberry, wild strawberry, violet, sweet spice and subtle oak. With air, notes of smoke, tobacco, iron, undergrowth, mineral earth and fine cedar add further depth.

Palate: full, structured and refined, with a dense core of fruit, firm fine-grained tannins and a strong mineral backbone. The finish is long, spicy and persistent, combining power, freshness and controlled Vosne-Romanée sensuality.

Expert view

92–94/100 — Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Neal Martin
92–94+/100 — Vinous, Antonio Galloni
93–95/100 — Stephen Tanzer
91–94/100 — Burghound, Allen Meadows

The major critics underline the stature and seriousness of this 2012 Malconsorts. Neal Martin praised its expressive wild berry, raspberry, blackberry and mineral character, with a refined, velvety finish. Antonio Galloni described a more reticent and tannic wine, built for patience, with iron, smoke, tobacco and dark red fruit. Stephen Tanzer highlighted its energy, stony minerality and long, sharply defined finish, while Burghound noted the wine’s muscle, firm structure and impressive length.

The 2012 vintage and serving advice

The 2012 vintage in red Burgundy produced wines of concentration, freshness and structure, with naturally low yields and a profile often marked by intensity rather than excess weight. In Vosne-Romanée, this gives a Malconsorts with depth, tension and strong ageing potential.

This bottle can now be approached, but it remains a wine of structure and patience. Open it in advance and allow it to breathe gradually in the glass. Serve at around 16°C in large Burgundy glasses, avoiding excessive decanting if the bottle shows a mature, delicate bouquet.

Key point: a highly rated Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru from one of the appellation’s most prestigious climats, combining dark fruit, spice, structure, mineral depth and long ageing potential.

Food pairings: duck breast, roast pigeon, venison, beef fillet, veal with mushrooms, truffled poultry, game birds, refined mushroom dishes, aged Comté or mature Burgundy cheeses.
