Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2016 — Domaine de Montille
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2016 from Domaine de Montille, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, is one of the most prestigious and sought-after Premier Crus of the Côte de Nuits. Located in the immediate surroundings of La Tâche, Aux Malconsorts gives a Pinot Noir of great depth, at once sensual, spicy and structured: black cherry, Morello cherry, raspberry, black fruits, violet, faded rose, Vosne spices, liquorice, fine earth, forest floor, graphite and a long mineral finish.
Domaine de Montille works two parcels in Les Malconsorts, including a large plot running through the cru from top to bottom, with highly complementary soils between the upper and lower sections. The 2016 beautifully illustrates this complexity: a deep, vibrant, floral and distinguished wine, closer to Grand Cru level in presence and length than to a simple Premier Cru. The magnum format further reinforces slow evolution, freshness and ageing capacity.
A Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru of very great breed, at once deep, perfumed and remarkably precise. The 2016 combines the floral nobility of Vosne, the density of Malconsorts and the fresh tension of the vintage: black fruits, cherry, raspberry, violet, spices, fine earth, tight yet elegant tannins and a long, straight and mineral finish. This is a wine of patience, perfume and long ageing potential.
Terroir: Aux Malconsorts, the mythical neighbour of La Tâche
The Aux Malconsorts climat is located in Vosne-Romanée, south of the village, in one of the most prestigious sectors of the Côte de Nuits. It is famous for its immediate proximity to La Tâche, with which it shares a spirit of depth, perfume and controlled power. At de Montille, one of the parcels covers the cru from top to bottom, offering a complete reading of this exceptional terroir.
The upper part shows light brown clay and gravelly stones, while the lower part rests on darker red clay. This complementarity gives the wine tension, freshness, structure, flesh and depth. In the 2016, the terroir translates into a Pinot Noir of great precision: black cherry, red and black fruits, violet, spice, liquorice, graphite, fine earth and tannins of impressive poise.
Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Vosne-Romanée, Aux Malconsorts, neighbouring La Tâche, light clays, gravelly stones, red clays, black cherry, violet, spice, graphite and great mineral tension.
de Montille signature: precision, energy, measured ageing, aromatic purity, vintage tension, noble tannins and a very fine reading of the climat.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby with garnet and purple reflections, bright, dense and still youthful in expression. In magnum, evolution should remain slow, with the colour preserving brightness, freshness and depth for a long time.
Nose: refined, deep and unmistakably Vosne, with black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, black fruits, violet, faded rose, fine spices, liquorice, noble earth and a touch of graphite. With aeration, nuances of forest floor, sweet pepper, black tea, fine leather, incense, dark flowers and limestone minerality may appear.
Palate: medium to full-bodied, dense, silky and highly structured, with fresh energy that lengthens the substance. Black and red fruit mingle with Vosne spices, liquorice, graphite and fine earth, supported by fine, tight and persistent tannins. The finish is long, intense, mineral and elegant, with a depth that recalls the proximity of the greatest crus of the sector.
Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, black fruits, small red berries, dense and precise fruit.
Flowers and spices: violet, faded rose, fine spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, incense, Vosne perfume.
Evolution and terroir: graphite, noble earth, forest floor, black tea, fine leather, limestone minerality, tight and elegant tannins.
Overall impression: Premier Cru at Grand Cru level, deep, floral, spicy and mineral, with very fine grain and major ageing potential.
Expression of the 2016 vintage
The 2016 vintage in Burgundy produced precise, fresh and often very balanced wines, with fine aromatic intensity and refined tannic structures. In Aux Malconsorts, this freshness gives a taut, vibrant and very pure wine, where the natural power of the climat remains perfectly framed by fruit elegance, floral finesse and minerality.
Today, this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2016 in magnum remains young and deserves extended ageing. It can already impress through its depth and perfume after measured aeration, but its true potential will be revealed with time: forest floor, truffle, fine leather, melted spices, dried flowers, black tea, graphite and mineral complexity should gradually join the purity of the fruit.
In summary: a rare, deep and extremely distinguished Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2016, enhanced by the magnum format and driven by one of the noblest terroirs of Vosne-Romanée.
Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, ripe raspberry, black fruits, violet, faded rose, fine spices, liquorice, graphite, noble earth, forest floor, fine leather and a very long mineral finish.
