Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2012 — Domaine Louis Jadot
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2012 from Domaine Louis Jadot, offered here in a case of 6 bottles, comes from one of the most prestigious climats of Vosne-Romanée. Located in the immediate vicinity of La Tâche, Aux Malconsorts delivers a Pinot Noir of great depth, at once spicy, mineral and highly structured: cherry, raspberry, strawberry, black fruits, dark red fruits, blood orange, Vosne spices, earth, forest floor, smoke, tobacco, iron and a long firm finish.
A historic Beaune house, Louis Jadot offers here a rare and confidential interpretation of Malconsorts, with extremely limited production in 2012. The wine is described as deep, pure, energetic and strongly marked by its tannic structure. It does not seek immediate seduction; rather, it expresses the tension, density and nobility of a Premier Cru often considered close to Grand Cru level.
A Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru of great breed, powerful without heaviness, deeply mineral and built for ageing. The 2012 combines red and black fruits, spices, earth, smoke, tobacco, iron and a strong tannic presence, with a straight, vibrant, precise and very long palate. It is a Malconsorts of patience, structure and great Burgundian nobility.
Terroir: Aux Malconsorts, the mythical neighbour of La Tâche
The Aux Malconsorts climat lies south of Vosne-Romanée, very close to La Tâche. This proximity explains the cru’s exceptional reputation: it shares with the village’s greatest terroirs a signature of perfume, spice, depth and structure, while retaining its own identity, often firmer, earthier and more tannic in youth.
Vosne’s clay-limestone soils give Pinot Noir a rare combination of aromatic sensuality and mineral tension. In Aux Malconsorts, this frame expresses itself with more power than in some of the village’s silkier climats: red fruits, black berries, earth, iron, smoke, spices and strong stony energy. The 2012 vintage further accentuates concentration, firmness and ageing potential.
Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, Vosne-Romanée, Aux Malconsorts, neighbouring La Tâche, cherry, raspberry, black fruits, blood orange, spices, earth, iron, smoke and stony minerality.
Louis Jadot signature: classical vinification, rare production, age-worthy structure, pure fruit, fine but firm tannins, mineral energy and very long persistence.
Tasting notes
Appearance: bright ruby red, slightly less saturated than some other Vosne Premier Crus from the same vintage, with early garnet reflections. The robe retains fine vibrancy, noble transparency and the intensity expected from Pinot Noir of great origin.
Nose: still reserved, deep and gradually expressive, with raspberry, strawberry, cherry, dark red fruits, black berries, blood orange, forest floor, earth and spices. With aeration, nuances of smoke, tobacco, iron, coffee, cedar, sweet pepper, liquorice, fine leather and stony minerality may appear.
Palate: deep, full, pure and strongly structured, with a precise attack and a savoury core of fruit. Flavours of red fruits, black berries, earth, spices, smoke and iron are supported by firm, fine and very present tannins. The finish is long, incisive, mineral and slightly tight, with remarkable energy and length that builds slowly.
Fruit: cherry, raspberry, strawberry, dark red fruits, black berries, pure and savoury fruit.
Flowers and spices: Vosne spices, sweet pepper, liquorice, blood orange, noble perfume and discreet floral nuances.
Evolution and terroir: forest floor, earth, smoke, tobacco, iron, coffee, cedar, fine leather, stony minerality, firm tannins.
Overall impression: deep, energetic, tannic and highly mineral Premier Cru, with remarkable fruit purity and an age-worthy finish.
Expression of the 2012 vintage
The 2012 vintage in Burgundy produced concentrated, intense and structured wines, often from low yields. In Aux Malconsorts, this year gives a wine that was particularly reticent and tannic in youth, with a strong structure and marked mineral energy. Available notes highlight red fruits, raspberry, strawberry, blood orange, black berries, earth, iron, smoke, tobacco and a long firm finish.
Today, this Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2012 is beginning to gain complexity, but remains a wine of patience. A fine bottle can already reveal depth, pure fruit, spices and a strong stony dimension, yet the tannins remain present. With time, the wine should develop more forest floor, truffle, fine leather, melted spices, black tea, noble earth and mineral complexity.
In summary: a rare, deep and highly structured Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts 2012, offered in a case of 6 bottles, with the mineral energy and nobility of a great terroir neighbouring La Tâche.
Dominant aromas: cherry, raspberry, strawberry, dark red fruits, black berries, blood orange, Vosne spices, forest floor, earth, smoke, tobacco, iron, cedar and a long firm mineral finish.
