Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 — Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

This Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 from Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, offered here in magnum 1.5 L, embodies one of the finest and most sought-after expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin. Set on a stony, cool and highly limestone-driven terroir, Ruchottes-Chambertin gives a Pinot Noir that is more vertical than massive, where depth meets great aromatic delicacy: cherry, woodland berries, spice, forest floor, pepper, floral notes, graphite and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is renowned for a style of great purity, combining textural finesse, fruit precision and noble tannins. From Ruchottes-Chambertin, the domaine produces a Grand Cru of rare elegance, often perceived as Chambertin raised in the spirit of Vosne: perfumed, silky and deep, but never heavy. The 2012 vintage, concentrated and energetic, reinforces this combination of density, freshness and refinement.

The spirit of the wine

A Grand Cru of great breed, both deep, delicate and intensely mineral. The 2012 combines the concentration of the vintage with the natural finesse of Ruchottes-Chambertin: red and black fruits, woodland berries, fine spices, pepper, forest floor, noble mushroom, floral notes and silky tannins. The magnum format accentuates slow evolution and preserves the wine’s energy.

Terroir: Ruchottes-Chambertin, altitude, stones and limestone

Ruchottes-Chambertin lies high on the slope, at the end of the Combe de Lavaux, on a cooler, stonier and shallower terroir than the Grand Crus lower down the hill. The soils are lean and very rocky, with Bathonian limestone in the upper part and Jurassic marls and limestone in the lower part. This structure gives wines that are less opulent than some Chambertins, but of great mineral precision.

At Mugneret-Gibourg, this terroir translates into a Pinot Noir of remarkable purity, combining woodland berries, forest floor, spice, floral notes and noble tannins. The thin, stony soil brings tension, freshness and verticality; the position high on the slope reinforces elegance; the limestone gives the long, mouth-watering and mineral finish that marks great Ruchottes.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, thin stony soil, limestone, woodland berries, cherry, forest floor, spice, graphite, pepper and great mineral freshness.

Mugneret-Gibourg signature: elegance, purity, noble and silky tannins, depth without heaviness, remarkable balance between richness and finesse.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep cherry red with ruby and garnet reflections, showing fine visual density for a Pinot Noir of this level. In magnum, evolution should remain slow, preserving fruit brightness and colour depth for a long time.

Nose: delicate, expressive and highly refined, led by woodland berries, black cherry, Morello cherry, small red berries, forest floor, fine spices, pepper and a floral touch. With aeration, deeper nuances of noble mushroom, fine meat, graphite, damp earth, light smoke and noble reduction may appear.

Palate: rich, deep and perfectly balanced, with noble texture, silky tannins and very clear mineral energy. The wine shows remarkable aromatic intensity without losing its delicate touch. Flavours of cherry, black fruits, woodland berries, spice, forest floor and pepper stretch into a long, pure, fresh and persistent finish, both powerful and very elegant.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: black cherry, Morello cherry, woodland berries, small red berries, delicate black fruits.

Flowers and spices: floral notes, fine spices, pepper, delicate perfume, light smoke.

Evolution and terroir: forest floor, noble mushroom, damp earth, graphite, noble reduction, limestone minerality.

Overall impression: deep, silky, mineral and elegant Grand Cru, with richness perfectly held by the freshness of the terroir.

Expression of the 2012 vintage

The 2012 vintage in Burgundy produced wines that are often concentrated, intense and structured, shaped by low yields. In Ruchottes-Chambertin, this natural density remains balanced by the freshness of the upper slope and the precision of limestone. At Mugneret-Gibourg, the 2012 stands out for its depth, energy, spicy perfume and balance between contained power and great finesse.

Today, this Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 in magnum remains a wine for long ageing. It may begin to reveal its first tertiary nuances, but its true interest still lies in slow evolution: the fruit will gradually gain notes of forest floor, truffle, melted spice, noble earth, graphite and floral complexity, while preserving the mineral backbone of the terroir.

In summary: a rare, deep and highly elegant Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012, carried by the stony upper-slope terroir, the precision of Mugneret-Gibourg and the slow evolution of the magnum format.

Dominant aromas: black cherry, Morello cherry, woodland berries, forest floor, fine spices, pepper, noble mushroom, graphite, damp earth, floral notes and a long mineral finish.
