Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 — Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, Magnum 1.5 L
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 is one of the rarest and most sought-after bottles in the Côte de Nuits. Offered here in magnum 1.5 L, this great Pinot Noir combines the nobility of a major Gevrey-Chambertin terroir with the refined, sensual and precise touch that has made the estate so admired.
The 2012 vintage, concentrated, classical and profoundly Burgundian, gives this Grand Cru an intense, mineral and beautifully balanced expression. The magnum format encourages slower evolution, better preservation of freshness and more gradual integration of tannins, making this bottle both a collector’s piece and a great wine for long ageing.
Terroir
Ruchottes-Chambertin lies at the end of the Combe de Lavaux, on the upper part of the great Gevrey-Chambertin terroirs. Its thin, stony and highly calcareous soils produce wines that are less massive than some other Gevrey Grands Crus, yet remarkably pure aromatically, with a mineral frame, natural freshness and an almost Vosne-like elegance. In the hands of Mugneret-Gibourg, this terroir takes on a particularly refined dimension: power remains restrained, texture dominates, and depth is revealed through length rather than extraction.
Tasting notes
Appearance: deep ruby red with garnet reflections, still bright, with a visual density that reflects both the concentration of the vintage and the slow evolution of the magnum format.
Nose: complex bouquet of black cherry, redcurrant, ripe raspberry, wild berries, dried rose, brown spices and liquorice, accompanied by nuances of truffle, wet stone, fine undergrowth, humus, delicate smoke and menthol.
Palate: deep, silky and highly precise, carried by noble tannins, fresh acidity and a marked mineral imprint. The wine combines textural richness, fruit purity and limestone tension, with a long, crystalline, persistent finish that still shows considerable reserve.
Expert reviews
98+/100 – Neal Martin, Vinous: the critic describes the 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru as one of the great wines of the vintage, remarkable for its purity and sensuality, with striking clarity, notes of tart red cherry, crushed stone and a linear, mineral and brilliant finish.
97/100 – Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy: a very high score for this rare cuvée, confirming the 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin as one of the major successes of both the estate and the vintage in Burgundy.
95/100 – Burghound: Allen Meadows highlights a pure, elegant and fresh nose marked by red and black fruits, truffle, wet stone, humus and a slightly wild nuance, followed by a vibrant, concentrated and intense palate with a very long mineral finish.
94/100 – Stephen Tanzer, Vinous: the review points to a racy, deep and soil-driven wine, with aromas of redcurrant, red raspberry, smoke, earth, dried rose and brown spices, followed by a persistent finish carried by broad, ripe tannins.
Expression of the vintage
The 2012 vintage gives this Ruchottes-Chambertin a rare combination of concentration, freshness and precision. The wine has the density of a great ageing year, yet without heaviness, with a very pure mineral line and an energy that carries the entire finish. In magnum, its evolution remains slow: the wine is beginning to reveal deeper complexity, while still retaining considerable reserve for the years ahead.
For service, a gradual opening is recommended. Gentle aeration in bottle, or a very measured passage in a wide carafe, will allow the wine to unfold without disturbing its aromatic finesse. Avoid aggressive decanting, in order to preserve the balance between fruit, spice, tertiary notes and limestone structure.
In summary: an exceptional Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, rated up to 98+/100 by Vinous. This 2012 magnum offers a rare expression of purity, depth, silky texture and mineral energy, in a style that is grand yet never demonstrative.
Food pairings: roast pigeon, duck with gentle spices, beef fillet, veal chop with morels, game birds, truffle risotto, wild mushrooms, mature poultry or soft Burgundian cheeses.
