Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 — Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 is one of the rarest and most sought-after cuvées in the Côte de Nuits. From one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s great Grand Cru terroirs, this exceptional Pinot Noir combines the mineral depth of the cru with the refined texture, fruit purity and tactile elegance that define the estate’s style.

The 2020 vintage gives this Grand Cru a dense, structured and highly precise expression, with deep substance, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish. Still very young, it presents itself as a major wine for cellaring, built more on reserve, limestone tension and length than on immediate seduction.

Terroir

Ruchottes-Chambertin lies at the end of the Combe de Lavaux, on the upper part of the great Gevrey-Chambertin terroirs. Its thin, stony and rocky soils produce wines that are less massive than some other Grands Crus of the village, yet remarkable for their purity, clear limestone structure, natural freshness and depth revealed above all through length. In the hands of Mugneret-Gibourg, this terroir takes on a particularly refined dimension: power remains contained, texture is noble, and minerality shapes the wine with great distinction.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep ruby red, bright and still very youthful in intensity.

Nose: precise bouquet of black cherry, Morello cherry, plum, blackberry, vivid red fruits and wild berries, accompanied by notes of violet, gentle spices, liquorice, dark chocolate, bramble, crushed stone and a light touch of anise.

Palate: deep, dense and structured, carried by fine yet still firm tannins. The wine combines concentration, energy, vibrant red fruit, spice and a marked limestone imprint, with a long, saline, mineral and still reserved finish.

Expert reviews

96+/100 – William Kelley, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: the critic describes a brilliant Ruchottes-Chambertin 2020, marked by dark berries, cherry, plum, violet, gentle spices and dark chocolate. The palate is deep, layered, taut and structured, with significant reserves of concentration, powdery tannins and a long saline finish. A wine that will require patience and reward it.

93/100 – Neal Martin, Vinous: tasted blind at Burgfest, the wine is praised for its clean and precise nose, combining red and black fruits, bramble and anise. The palate is savoury and lively, driven by red cherry, strawberry, white pepper, gentle spices and fine mineral depth on the finish.

Expression of the vintage

The 2020 vintage gives Ruchottes-Chambertin remarkable density, yet without heaviness. The fruit is ripe, dark and concentrated, while the structure remains taut, supported by precise acidity and a very present limestone imprint. This Grand Cru is still young, almost strict in its architecture, with the reserve to suggest slow and profound evolution into the 2050s, or even beyond in perfect cellaring conditions.

For service, open the bottle several hours in advance. Gradual aeration in bottle, or a very measured passage in a wide carafe, will allow the wine to unfold without disturbing its finesse. Avoid aggressive decanting in order to preserve the precision of the fruit, the floral dimension and the mineral tension of the cru.

In summary: a rare and highly sought-after Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, rated 96+/100 by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. A deep, structured, saline and mineral Pinot Noir, in a refined, reserved and long-lived style.

Food pairings: roast pigeon, beef fillet, duck with gentle spices, veal chop with morels, game birds, truffle risotto, wild mushrooms, mature poultry or soft Burgundian cheeses.
