Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 — Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

This Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 from Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg embodies one of the finest, most vertical and most sought-after expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin. Set on a cool, stony and highly limestone-driven terroir, Ruchottes-Chambertin gives here a Pinot Noir of great breed: bright red cherry, strawberry, red and black fruits, bramble, anise, white pepper, quatre-épices, forest floor, graphite and a long mineral finish.

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is renowned for wines of great purity, where depth never comes at the expense of elegance. From Ruchottes-Chambertin, the domaine produces a Grand Cru of noble texture, silky tannins and remarkable precision. The 2020 vintage, marked by ripeness and concentration, retains surprising freshness thanks to the upper-slope terroir, giving a wine that is intense, savoury, precise and still very young.

The spirit of the wine

A Grand Cru that is deep but never heavy, where the power of 2020 is held by the mineral freshness of Ruchottes. The wine combines bright red fruit, a dimension of black fruit, notes of bramble, anise, white pepper and quatre-épices, with a savoury, vivid and highly structured palate. This is a Ruchottes of precision, tension and long ageing potential.

Terroir: Ruchottes-Chambertin, altitude, stones and limestone

Ruchottes-Chambertin lies high on the slope, at the end of the Combe de Lavaux, on a cooler, stonier and thinner terroir than the Grand Crus located lower down the hillside. The soil is shallow, very rocky and rich in stones, with Bathonian limestone in the upper part and Jurassic marls and limestone in the lower part. This structure gives wines that are less opulent than some Chambertins, but of remarkable mineral precision.

At Mugneret-Gibourg, this terroir translates into a Pinot Noir of great purity, dominated by woodland berries, forest floor, fine spices and a noble tannic texture. The thin, stony soil brings tension, freshness and verticality; the position high on the slope reinforces elegance; limestone gives the long, mouth-watering and mineral finish that marks great Ruchottes.

Terroir expression: Pinot Noir, thin stony soil, limestone, red cherry, strawberry, woodland berries, bramble, forest floor, spice, graphite and great mineral freshness.

Mugneret-Gibourg signature: elegance, purity, noble and silky tannins, depth without heaviness, remarkable balance between concentration, finesse and tension.

Tasting notes

Appearance: deep cherry red with ruby and purple reflections, bright, clear and still very youthful in expression. The colour shows both the concentration of the 2020 vintage and the natural brilliance of Pinot Noir from this limestone terroir.

Nose: clean, precise and highly refined, with an attractive blend of red and black fruits, red cherry, strawberry, woodland berries, bramble, anise, forest floor, white pepper and quatre-épices. With aeration, nuances of graphite, discreet flowers, fresh earth, fine spices and limestone minerality add further aromatic depth.

Palate: savoury from the attack, vivid, deep and very balanced. Red cherry and strawberry fruit mingle with black fruits, spice, anise and white pepper, carried by fine yet structuring tannins. The finish is long, fresh, mineral and lightly aniseed, with true depth and a wet-stone sensation that extends the persistence.

Aromatic profile

Fruit: red cherry, strawberry, woodland berries, vivid red fruits, delicate black fruits.

Flowers and spices: white pepper, quatre-épices, anise, fine spices, discreet floral notes.

Evolution and terroir: bramble, forest floor, graphite, fresh earth, wet stone, limestone minerality.

Overall impression: precise, deep, savoury and mineral Grand Cru, with the concentration of the vintage and the fresh elegance of Ruchottes.

Expression of the 2020 vintage

The 2020 vintage in Burgundy produced wines that are often concentrated, ripe and intense, but the great limestone terroirs were able to preserve freshness and definition. In Ruchottes-Chambertin, this natural density is balanced by altitude, stony soil and limestone tension. At Mugneret-Gibourg, the wine stands out for its precision, pure fruit, savoury energy and very present minerality.

Today, this Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 remains very young. It can already impress through its aromatic intensity and purity, but its true interest lies in extended ageing. With time, the red and black fruit should evolve towards more forest floor, truffle, melted spices, noble earth, graphite and floral complexity, while preserving the mineral backbone of the terroir.

In summary: a rare, deep and highly precise Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020, carried by the stony upper-slope terroir, the purity of Mugneret-Gibourg and the controlled concentration of the vintage.

Dominant aromas: red cherry, strawberry, red and black fruits, bramble, anise, white pepper, quatre-épices, forest floor, graphite, fresh earth, wet stone and a long mineral finish.
